Profile Information

Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
Ben Ruddy (M.Phil, Hons, B.A., Hons) is a post-graduate student of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and a graduate student of the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Ben obtained his Masters of Philosophy (Hons) from the Department of International Peace Studies, Trinity College Dublin, for a thesis titled ‘The Provocation of the Other: Levinas, Moral Responsibility and Genocide in Srebrenica’. Utilizing the philosophy of Franco-Jewish scholar Emmanuel Levinas, Ben’s dissertation aimed to foreground the question of individual and societal level responsibilities towards other people, most particularly in times of crisis. More precisely, his paper was a critical assessment of the application of Levinas’s theory of ethics as “first philosophy” to the genocide that occurred in Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the month of July 1995.

Prior to receiving his Masters of Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin, Ben studied at the School of Geography and Archaeology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Writing for a double major, he produced two theses: ‘The Geopolitical Narrative of U.S. Foreign Aid Post 9/11’ and ‘Philosophising on Kulturegesellschaft: Outline of the collectors' illusion with the archaeological artefact’. Ben received the title ‘National University of Ireland Scholar’ twice on the basis of academic excellence while studying at undergraduate level, and was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Hons).
