Profile

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
For a number of years now, I have been conducting research (academic and applied) on NGOs engaged in peace-building between Israelis and Palestinians. However, my interest in peace building here in the Middle East is not limited to research. I have taken part in a number of joint Palestinian-Israel projects, including an intensive 2-week workshop held in the fall of 2005 for 5 Palestinians and 5 Israelis on the issue of “Humanitarian Assistance and Organizational Capacity Building”. I am a member of an organization called “Osim Shalom”, a group of Arab and Jewish social workers in Israel lobbying for peace and dialogue.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I was born and raised in New York City and settled in Israel in 1982. I received my BA from New York University in Arabic Literature & Language and an MSW from the University of Michigan School of Social Work, where I specialized in community organization. I completed my Ph.D. at Ben Gurion University, having written a dissertation of the significance of different categories of identity in peace movement organizations in Israel, South Africa and Northern Ireland. My hobbies include bicycling, travel, coffee and hockey. I am married with two sons and live outside of Tel Aviv. My older son just entered the army last year and so the issue of conflict resolution has recently become that much more personal for me.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you have direct and significant expertise
My interest in conflict and peace building efforts underway at the level of civil society has extended to other conflict regions as well, including Northern Ireland, South Africa and Cyprus. Generally speaking, I am fascinated with comparative aspects of conflict and peaqce building - even if somewhat skeptical regarding the transferability of lessons learned.
What is your current country of residence?
Israel
What is your current job (and organization) and/or where and what field are you studying?
Teach at the Master's Level at Hebrew University, Jerusalem and continue research (in applied and academic settings) of issues of philanthropy, peace/conflict and the linkages between Diapsora communities and their (real or imagined) homeland states.
What is one of your favorite websites in the field? (please provide one answer per box)
http://www.mideastweb.org
Which are your primary sectoral areas of expertise?
Peacebuilding, Civil Society
Which are your primary skills areas?
Evaluation, Research

Hello,

Every few weeks I look through the new members for interesting people. Welcome to the site. I'd like to introduce myself and see if you'd like to begin communication. I am very interested in ADR, mediation, negotiation, human rights and politics from a legal and consultancy standpoint. It seems we have some common interests and may be able to help/learn from each other.

Thanks for your time,
Chris LeGore
