Viewpoints: Negotiating Disarmament
Reflections on guns, fighters, and armed violence in peace processes
The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue is pleased to announce the publication of the edited collection, Viewpoints - Reflections on Guns, Fighters, and Armed Violence in Peace Processes, the first of a two-part series bringing together first-hand accounts and careful observations from individuals with diverse connections to and experiences of peace processes. Viewpoints provides space for their views on how weapons control, violence reduction, and disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration fare in peace negotiations and processes.
The publication features four short opinion pieces:
Trends in weapons control and disarmament in peace processes, by Camilla Waszink;
Perspectives on demobilisation, reintegration and weapons control in the El Salvador peace process, by Joaquín M Chávez;
Negotiating decommissioning and reintegration in Aceh, Indonesia, by Kalle Liesinen and Sami
Lahdensuo of the Crisis Management Initiative, and;
A mediator’s perspective, by Julian Thomas Hottinger.
It is a part of the HD Centre’s Negotiating Disarmament project, which aims to generate reflections and observations on weapons and security related challenges in peace negotiations and processes, as part of the organisation’s commitment to supporting peacemaking.
The publication was developed with direct support from the Government of Canada, to which the HD Centre expresses its gratitude. Appreciation is also extended to the Governments of Switzerland and Norway for their input and support for other elements of the project.
Viewpoints is currently available in English and will soon be available in Spanish too.
