Event Description

- Tok Melanesia launch -

A new website for the southwest Pacific – telingamedia.com – has just launched its discussion forum under the title ‘Violence begins at home’.

The forum is called ‘Tok Melanesia’ and its launch represents the first of many opportunities to add your voice to the burning issues of our region.

The forum topics on Tok Melanesia will be wide-ranging and complement the published journalism on its parent site. The site’s content falls into six categories: Home & the World (people's movements/people on the move); Concrete Jungle (development tropical style); Politrix (rulers & their rules); Creation Rebels (Arts & Culture); Blood, Faith & Fire (kinship, religion & conflict) and Deep Island Time (knowledge, history, memory).

Tok Melanesia invites contributions on the taboo topic of domestic violence. The forum is open to all but it also urges Melanesians – wherever they live – to exchange ideas on the problem in their homelands in a non-confrontational way. To make this easier, Telinga Media has prepared a special report on domestic violence in Papua New Guinea: ‘is domestic violence giving culture a bad name in PNG?’ it asks.

While the forum is predominantly in English, contributors will have the chance to share their views in any other lingua franca used across the Melanesian archipelago: any of the Melanesian pidgins, French, Fijian and Bahasa Indonesia.

Be part of this new initiative to promote honest talk across the islands on topics that matter by visiting –
