Event Description

Aceh is now living in peace after more than 28 years in political and armed conflict. From the beginning of conflict women were not involved in deciding the conflict, but during the conflict, liked or disliked, women were pulled into the conflict. They were pulled in the conflict as the logistic supporters and even as the victims. Most women were claimed to be taken as the women combatants, head of the families etc. But when during peace processes, women's roles were neglected. They were not involved in the decision making processes. It means lacking of women's participation in peace process. Even now, in the decision making process in peace situation is still lack.

There are some factors which cause this happens like this. Internally, the capacity of most women, especially those the grassroots women in Aceh. They are not able to participate because of lacking of knowledge, skill and courage to express their aspiration, thoughts, expectation orally and written. Externally, women's opportunities to participate is also still very limited.

Realizing this condition, Center for Community Development and Education (CCDE) Banda Aceh, as a local NGO has been working to build Acehnese grassroots women's capacity for various public sectors, such as gender training, leadership, ertenpreneurship for women and girls, livelihood skills, for changing women's thinking paradigms and live skills. Besides, CCDE also aimed its training series for building Acehnese women writing habit through various creative writing training and publishing Acehnese women media such as POTRETmagazibe where the contributors are women from the grassroots, activist and academicians.
In order to build Acehnese women capacity to participate in decision making process at the level and district level, CCDE has done some communication training for grassroots women.

The latest training was held from December 14-16,2009 participated by 25 women from 8 districts in Aceh. This training was supported by the tere des hommes Germany. During the training women realized that they had various limitations in communication. Therefore during the three days of training, they were encouraged to express their minds, thoughts, ideas in front of public as public speaking skills. Alla participants promised that they would continue to practice the knowledge and skill of public speaking in their community bay setting monthly discussion as the media of practice. It will be the capital for women to be more active in building peace in Aceh in the future. They realize that it is impossible that women can participate if their capacity to participate is very low or limited?
