2009 Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) Teacher Training Institute offered by the national headquarters of the American Red Cross on July 7-9, 2009.

A limited number of scholarships are available to help teachers and educators cover the costs of attending the EHL training. Scholarships of up to $500 will be awarded for transportation and lodging-related expenses.


The registration cost is $75, which includes all curriculum materials and supplemental resources as well as some meals during the workshop. CEUs AVAILABLE: Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered to interested educators, and a Certificate of Participation will be provided upon completion of the training.

Starting in 2002, EHL has been introduced to schools in more than 40 countries and the American Red Cross leads the effort to introduce EHL to the United States. Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international educational program for young people. The aim of the program is to expose learners to issues of humanitarian law and principles of respect for life and human dignity. EHL is designed in alignment with social studies requirements around the country and can be used in a variety of classrooms (History, World History, etc.) and by confluence of instructors with diverse subject-matter expertise. The EHL Teacher Training Institute offers educators hands-on experience with EHL curriculum, enabling them to teach their students respect for human life and dignity, ethical judgment, global citizenship, the protections of the Geneva Conventions and the role of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations.

The Institute is designed for teachers and educators throughout the country at the high school and community college level. Participants will be provided with a variety of learning materials and strategies to help them incorporate EHL into existing educational programs. Through brainstorming, large- and small-group discussions, reflective writing, class debates and role-plays, students explore the plight of war refugees, landmine victims, soldiers and officers caught in often agonizing dilemmas. This Institute is an exciting professional development opportunity for high school and 2-year/4-year college faculty. The curriculum is highly interactive, led by an experienced EHL master teachers, includes invited guests from the International Committee of the Red Cross, and will be a hands-on discovery of the EHL curriculum.
