ISLAMABAD – After the deadlock between the students, teaching faculty and the administration of National University of Modern Languages (NUML) over the issue of thrashing a lecturer by the registrar, the university has been closed till February 12.
The students and the faculty members had announced to boycott the classes until their demands were met but the university hardened its stance and was not ready to sack the registrar of NUML, Brig (R) Obaidullah Ranjha.
The students and the faculty members boycotted the classes and wore black armbands. Despite harsh weather conditions the students staged protest demonstrations at the campus demanding immediate termination of Brig (R) Ranjha. They were holding placards and raising slogans against humiliation of their teacher at the hands of the university administration.
The faculty members and students condemned the highhanded behaviour of registrar, Brig Ranjha on February 4.
They demanded for the immediate termination of the registrar. They said that the demands had been duly conveyed to the Rector by the faculty representatives and if the demands were not met by 6 pm in the evening, the faculty would approach the President of Pakistan, the Chancellor of NUML, for redressal of grievances.
Meanwhile, as directed by the President, the Ministry of Education is going to form an inquiry committee to probe the issue today (Tuesday). The head of the inquiry committee formed by the university, Kamran Jahangir had already refused to be part of the inquiry while the head of the Urdu Department and noted short story writer Rashid Amjad resigned from his post in protest.
