Job and Consultancy openings at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies, Addis Ababa

The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), an autonomous unit within Addis Ababa University, seeks to expand its team with qualified professionals for various fixed term and consultancy positions in its Africa Peace and Security Programme (APSP), a joint initiative with the African Union Commission. The mission of IPSS is to support the African Union, RECs and other African institutions in the design and development of “African-led solutions” in peace and security through education, outreach and research that are carried out at standards of global excellence.


Fixed term positions (fixed term until 10/2014, extendable - (employment by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH - GIZ- German Society for International Cooperation) ):

  • Education Leader, from 01.09.2012 or earlier 
  • Outreach Leader, from 01.09.2012 or earlier
  • Research Leader, from 01.09.2012 or earlier

Consultancy positions:

  •   Lead Facilitator for the course “Managing Peace and Security in Africa (MPSA)”
  •  Assistant Facilitators for MPSA
  •  Expert in blended learning and educational business processes
  •  Outreach Coordinator for a campaign on Youth, Peace and Security in Africa
  •  Senior Researcher for case study Somalia


All positions are based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

General requirements

  National of a member state of the African Union
  Self starter; results oriented; self-organized; willing and able to work in an often difficult and highly complex environment; outstanding work ethics
  Team player with a true interest in other people
  Willing and able to

  • work in a multi-cultural, pan-African setting
  • continuously meet demanding work standards / global good practice
  • flexibly adjust to frequent changes of specific objectives, priorities and institutional set-up
  • contribute significantly and demonstrably to the programme’s mission

> Solid professional background in peace & security or related fields; your own expertise shall allow you to easily communicate with top experts; of critical importance are your interest and ability to rapidly grasp new ideas and situations, and to communicate clearly on these issues.
