Civil Society capacity-building audit

Background

Saferworld is an international non-governmental organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives for ordinary people. It is based in the UK with programmes in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Working with Civil Society has historically been an important part of Saferworld’s identity and civil society actors remain fundamental to Saferworld’s work. 

Saferworld is seeking a consultant to conduct an audit of Saferworld’s work on civil society capacity-building to date and, develop recommendations for the most strategic way for Saferworld to take this area of work forward. This will enable Saferworld to better understand what the organisation already knows and is doing on civil society capacity-building, where the gaps are and how to strengthen our capacity on this issue. The audit will lay the foundations for a more strategic approach to this area of work across the organisation.

Specific tasks and objectives

The overall objective of the consultancy is to:

• Strengthen Saferworld’s work on civil society capacity-building by increasing the understanding of our activity in this area and presenting options for the development of a Saferworld civil society capacity-building strategy

The specific tasks are to:

1. Conduct an audit which covers what Saferworld has been doing on civil society capacity-building (CSCB) in our regional and thematic programmes.

1. Compare our approach to best practices in capacity development by other actors in the peacebuilding or development fields

1. On the basis of the audit, propose a coherent definition of Saferworld’s approach to capacity building that encompasses our work and provide recommendations on how to strengthen Saferworld’s approach to CSCB

Consultant’s competencies

The consultant should have the following skills, knowledge and experience:

• Excellent knowledge of civil society capacity-building
• Proven experience of conducting audits
• Postgraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in international relations, development or related issues
• Excellent English written and verbal skills
• Experience of working for an international NGO in a capacity-building or civil society development role.

Application procedure

The duration of this consultancy is expected to be a maximum of 18 days between March and the end of April 2013.
