Join us at the Summer Peacebuilding Institute (SPI) May 6-June 14. SPI courses are useful for anyone working to promote interpersonal, organizational, or societal change. Participants gain knowledge and skills necessary to understand the conflict that often accompanies change and learn life lessons to better themselves, their communities, organizations, and the world.

Participants will learn from the course instructor as well as other participants and are encouraged to reflect and to share from their own experiences in the safe space created by SPI.  Minds and hearts are further opened with stimulating conversations outside of class, laughter, hiking, volleyball, group meals, and many other activities.

Courses are offered this year in restorative justice, trauma awareness, monitoring and evaluation, reconciliation, conflict analysis. In addition, several courses operate at the intersection of conflict transformation with a related field such as development, arts and media, design of peacebuilding programs, humanitarian aid, and faith.

This year SPI is offering new courses in narrative theory, humanitarian aid, and nurturing resilience. We are also offering our first off-campus course: Developing Peace Leadership in the Wilderness. In partnership with the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding, participants will leave the university for seven days of hiking and camping in the Monongahela National Forest, where they will use an experiential approach to learn peacebuilding and leadership skills.

SPI offers four 7-day sessions, each with four to six courses running at the same time. Courses can be taken for professional skills training or master’s level academic credit. SPI 2013 will be held from May 6 to June 14, 2013 at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
