Departure of AFC general secretary: Business as usual in a swamp of corruption allegations

By James M. Dorsey

Transparency appears nowhere on the radar of Asian soccer governors as global soccer reels from the worst crisis in the sport’s history. That was evident in a terse statement issued by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announcing the resignation of its suspended general secretary, Dato Alex Soosay.

The statement made no mention of Mr. Soosay’s suspension, an investigation into the general secretary’s apparent attempt to tamper or hide documents related…

Stadium construction: A political barometer

By James M. Dorsey

Politics is never divorced from sports, not even when it comes to the construction of stadia. Budgets however have recently thwarted plans in Turkey and Saudi Arabia to build a host of sporting facilities in a bid to either win votes or curry favour with youth and other segments of the population.

By contrast, Qatar despite the risk of posting its first budget deficit in 15 years, is moving full steam ahead with the construction of eight…

Reforming soccer governance: Tackling political corruption alongside financial wrongdoing

By James M. Dorsey

The mushrooming governance scandal in world soccer body FIFA increasingly spotlights political in addition to financial corruption in global soccer.

Revelations about government and corporate deals made to secure Germany’s hosting of the 2006 World Cup alongside the prominence of political figures in sports governance, frequently aligned with autocratic regimes, emphasizes the need for a clean-up of soccer governance. Blatter enables AFC to keep its skeletons under lock and key

By James M. Dorsey

Embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter has spun the world soccer body’s crisis as a public relations and reputation management issue and a problem caused by individuals rather than a crisis resulting from financial and political corruption embedded in FIFA’s culture. In doing so, he has given a blank check to interested soccer administrators to conduct business as usual instead of ensuring that their organizations do not confront a crisis similar to that of…

Qatar’s unintended sporting legacy: A FIFA clean-up, exposure of political corruption, and corporate sponsor rethink

By James M. Dorsey

Qatar’s 2022 World Cup is promising to be a rare example of a mega sporting event that leaves a legacy of social, political and economic change – but not in the way the Gulf state’s ruling family had imagined.

Controversy about Qatar’s successful bid coupled with world soccer body FIFA’s failure to seriously tackle corruption in soccer governance in its own house as well as its regional federations, prominent among which the Asian Football Confederation…

A vote for Prince Ali is a likely vote for change – and for challenge

By James M. Dorsey

FIFA vice president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein’s announcement that he will challenge the world soccer body’s four-time president Sepp Blatter in elections later this year has definitively turned the poll into a battle for the group’s future. A vote for the prince is at least a vote against the FIFA president embattled as a result of multiple corruption scandals and more likely a vote for change.

With his announcement following months of canvassing of FIFA…

Bahrain: A headache for Obama and Blatter

Friday, August 12, 2011

By James M. Dorsey

US president Barak Obama and Sepp Blatter, the head of world soccer body FIFA, share the same headache: what to do about Bahrain?

So far, Messrs. Obama and Blatter have essentially shied away from confronting the issue of a ruler who employs mercenaries to violently suppress pro-democracy demonstrators, including some of the country's most prominent soccer players.

The protests in February and March that started with…
