This Week in African Conflict... December 13th-20th, 2011.
Hello, hope all is well!
This week’s conflict reports will be a little thinner than usual, as I have been feeling a bit under the weather the last couple days and haven’t been reading as extensively as normal. Please be sure to add anything I have missed in the comments below or send via email to apeaceofconflict@gmail.com.
Thanks!
Rebecca

Politicizing the holidays. Maouloud in Côte d'Ivoire.
Today in Côte d'Ivoire there is public holiday; at least for some. Others will take the holiday tomorrow.
Sadly, the holiday to commemorate the birth of the Prophet (peace be upon him), known as Maouloud/Mawlid (and numerous other spellings), is now being used as a political weapon between Gbagbo and Ouattara's camps. On Monday, Imam Idriss Kudu Kone, chairman of the National Islamic Council (CNI), declared Tuesday the paid holiday, which was supported by the Gbagbo government.…

Is peace a possibility for Cote D'Ivoire in 2011? Part 2
In the previous post I spoke about some of the underlying tensions and the general situation over the past few weeks in Cote D’Ivoire. In this post, I will discuss some of the “solutions” being proposed, the likelihood of their usage and the effect I believe they will have on the population.
Sanctions
The international community was quick…

Is peace a possibility for Cote D’Ivoire in 2011? Part 1.
This past month or so has been a particularly stressful one for me. I have been living in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire for most of the past year and have watched as the country has been sinking deeper and deeper into
violence and intense propaganda. Sadly, I’ve found I no longer believe a word I read in both local and international news, as I have read “news” that is in direct contrast to what I have seen and heard with my own
eyes and ears. The stories seem to be escalating the…

It has been almost a month since the elections in Ivory Coast produced not one – but two presidents – one sworn in ceremoniously, wrapped in a regal sash, gushing in front of cameras at the presidential palace
– the other hunkered…

International community’s response to the Ivorian situation.
I have no access to foreign tv news and radio at the moment, as it has been cut off through the government in an attempt to stop what is being termed “illegal” announcements of a Presidential winner. I have
been trawling the internet searching for the international response to
the current situation trying to gauge international opinion and what
information is being released where.
The election happened last Sunday, and since then things have gone…

Return to the coup d’etat status quo: Elections in Cote D’Ivoire
Here's a piece I just wrote for STAND Canada. I was going to write a second piece exclusively for this blog, but am still tired and weakened from my recent bout with malaria that I didn't feel quite up to
it yet. I'll have some new pieces for you soon and should have the
weekly conflict roundup posted sometime tomorrow!
Since this piece was written last night, we have had some more news: the Constitutional Council has overturned the CEI's election results and…

Lacking Justice
I returned to Cote D’Ivoire in West Africa this summer after almost six years away. Much has changed in this beautiful country, but one thing that has kept constant is the corruption. Although Cote D’Ivoire’s civil war technically ended with a tentative peace agreement in 2007, hopes for long-lasting peace are still distant and insecure because corruption reigns supreme. Justice is out of reach for most in the country, as it is believed impossible to get a favorable decision in the justice…
