- What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
- Asa journalist working in India's conflict zone of Northeast my urge for peace and resolving conflict is a natural reaction.
- Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
- I am a 36-year old commerce graduate woking as a journalist in Assam, a province situated in India's troubled Northeastern region. I am brought up in the region's another violence infested state, Nagaland. Covering conflict situations, peace processes and trans-border issues are my core areas of strength.

- My direct experience is limited to India in general and its northeast region in particular. But I am keen observer of conflict situations around the world and have a significant expertise about the conflict situation in Myanmar, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

Naga rebel groups take unity leap
The Naga warring groups have signed a joint declaration to resolve “all outstanding issues” among themselves in the “larger interest” of the Naga people and for an early solution to the nearly 65-year-old Naga political imbroglio.

Thanks for your comment, yes your are absolutely right no religion can every justify the killing of the innocents but unfortunately a fanatic group is trying to justify killing of the innocents and jeopardizing the peace of the world. It wants to plunge Pakistan and Afghanistan into cave of darkness and Stone Age.

Sri Lanka: After the final round of armed violence: a need for a vision of the future. Citizens of the World call for creative responses to the challenge of new government structures.

On 19 May 2009, the Government of Sri Lanka proclaimed an end to the fighting against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelan (LTTE), one of the world’s most enduring insurgencies. The LTTE had once controlled a quarter of Sri Lanka’s territory as they had pressed their campaign for an independent state for the country’s Tamil minority. Some 265,000 people have been displaced during the past several months in this last round of fighting.
Thus the major issue today is no longer calling for negotiations between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE but rather to encourage all parties to look toward the future in a spirit of reconciliation.
The armed conflict, which began in 1983, has taken an estimated 70,000 lives with many wounded and lives broken. The psychological wounds are deep, and the healing of individual traumas with psycho-spiritual techniques is a real priority.
There is a need to develop governmental structures in which all citizens will feel that they belong and that their interests are safeguarded. Citizens of the World have often proposed federal structures as a way of respecting differences in a pluralistic society while providing the possibilities of joint action.
Such federal forms of government were agreed to in 1987 with the India-Sri Lanka accord leading to the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lanka Constitution. The Amendment provides for the establishment of provincial councils. Unfortunately, these councils have never become functional.
The suffering of the war may sow the seeds of future unrest and a desire for revenge unless steps are taken quickly to develop flexible structures which provide real regional autonomy.
We hope that you will join with other Citizens of the World in this call for creative responses in Sri Lanka

Kidnapped Canadian Released but Nigeria's Abduction Business Set to Continue

Nigerian security forces say they arrested several alleged kidnappers during an operation on Wednesday to rescue a Canadian woman seized by gunmen in northern Nigeria. The suspect is due in court on Thursday.
Security forces have intensified their search for those behind the mid-April abduction of Julie Ann Mulligan, a 45-year-old Canadian mother of two. She was freed unharmed in the northern city of Kaduna late Wednesday. Mulligan was kidnapped while visiting Nigeria with four others as part of a Rotary Club exchange program.
The hostage takers reportedly demanded more than $100,000 for her release. Abductions are common in the restive southern oil-rich Niger Delta, but Mulligan's kidnapping was believed to be the first in the north.
A coalition of 75 rights groups in Northern Nigeria campaigned for the release of the Canadian woman. A spokesman for the group, Shehu Sani, told VOA the kidnapping was "a serious and dangerous development. "
"Kidnapping has become a big business for those who partake in it. And it has also enticed a lot of young people from all parts of the country to get involved and abandon whatever they feel they were doing. It is unprecedented in northern part of Nigeria for a foreigner or anyone like that ever to be kidnapped. It's never been part of our culture, it's been part of our history. For a situation like this, it is a serious and dangerous development, " he said.
And while Mulligan has regained her freedom, many say Nigeria's booming abduction business will continue. Sani says kidnapping for ransom has become a viable industry in Nigeria. "This trend is not likely to stop because it has reached a point that even criminals that are involved in armed robberies and other violent crimes are seeing the business of kidnappings as the most lucrative. And also it is very clear that many people are benefiting from it," she said.
The Nigerian police chief, Mike Okiro, has said that, between 2006 and 2008, hostage takers extorted more than $100 million from families and oil companies.
Strict new penalties for kidnapping, including the death penalty, are being considered in Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer.
In a report made public earlier this month, a presidential committee on the Niger Delta said 300 people were taken hostage in the troubled southern region in the first nine months of 2008.
