For over 25 years, Ruffy Magbanua was deeply involved in community journalism, writing for various newspapers , local and national as well as wires agencies like the Philippines News Agency and the defunct United Press International.

In 1994, Ruffy won the prestigious Anvil Award for community journalism given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines as Editor of Pinikit, a wall newspaper circulated in Bukidnon province, Mindanao, Philippines.

Ruffy held various positions in the local newspaper industry. He served as Business Editor of Sunstar Cagayan de Oro, a local daily circulating in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. He writes stories in local dailies on rural development initiatives, poverty alleviation and environmental issues.
