Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
While in undergraduate school at Middlebury College, I took a "Geography of Peace" class, which helped shape the direction I wanted to take my life and career. I realized that the perspectives, stories, and skills that were being taught in that class were, for the most part, completely omitted from a traditional high school curricula in America.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
After graduating from Middlebury College in 2003, I have since worked for a variety of youth-focused organizations. I am currently a regional director for the Democracy Matters Institute, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that trains high school and college youth to build their capacity as grassroots organizers, especially around the issue of getting big money out of politics and other pro-democracy reforms. Before Democracy Matters I spent three years as a program instructor and supervisor for the Close Up Foundation, the nation's largest civics education and engagement non-profit. I have also been a crew leader for the Student Conservation Association and a teacher for Putney Student Travel's Excel Program. I also work part-time as a consultant for www.project-agape.com, an internet company that builds online tools for users to create causes that benefit non-profits.

I am currently a graduate student at American University in Washington D.C. where I am pursuing a MA in International Training and Education and a certificate in International Peace and Conflict Resolution.

I live with my wife Alyson Lipsky and our dog Reginald in Falls Church, VA. Alyson is the Assistant Director at the George Washington University Africa Center for Health and Human Security.

hi Daryn,

I had the opportunity to take one course about non-violent movements with May King here in costa Rica. Since then, I have been searching for more courses in this area but I have not had any success yet. I would like to hear that in the near future your organization offers these courses online so we can all have the chance to learn more about it. In peace, sharon.
