Profile Information

Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I received my Ph.D. in International Public Policy, and then joined an NGO specializing in health and poverty alleviation. I worked for two years in Cambodia and three years in Zambia (with side trips to Kenya and the DRC). In late 2007 I became an assistant professor at the Global Collaboration Center, Osaka University, Japan. My research focuses on the issue of 'stealth conflicts' - those that are marginalized and ignored.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you (or your organization) have direct and significant expertise

Which are your primary skills areas(or the primary skill areas of your organization)?

What are some of your current areas of research (if any)?
Responses to conflict - how the outside world (policymakers, the media, the public and academia) responds (or fails to respond) to conflict in the world. I have come up with the term 'stealth conflicts' to refer to those that are marginalized and ignored (many of these are not 'forgotten' conflicts because they were never 'remembered' in the first place, and because they have not simply slipped the minds of those in a position to respond). I focus particularly on conflicts in Africa - because they are world's worst.
If appropriate feel free to list several of your (or your organization's) publications
Books:
'Stealth Conflicts: How the World's Worst Violence Is Ignored', Aldershot: Ashgate, 2008
'The Silence of the UN Security Council: Conflict and Peace Enforcement in the 1990s', Firenze: European Press Academic Publishing, 2004

Articles (select):
'Stealth Conflicts: Africa's World War in the DRC and International Consciousness', Journal of Humanitarian Assistance, 2004
'The Other Side of the CNN Factor: Media and Conflict', Journalism Studies, 2002
