What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
ntroduction

The United Nations defines ‘a Culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups and nations’.http://www.cultureofpeaceexhibit.org/ . In my daily practice of Buddhism I chant the phrase Myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting [Nam] - Myoho-renge-kyo will therefore enable you to grasp the mystic truth innate in all life. .The workings of the universe are an expression of a single principle or Law, expressed as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By putting their lives into harmony with this Law, people can unlock their hidden potential and achieve creative harmony with the environment. This is the ultimate expression of individual empowerment that each person can transform the inevitable sufferings of life into sources of growth and fulfillment and become a positive influence in his or her family and community. Through practice and study, I believe that a human being is able to understand the cycle of life and death which is understood through the mystic law. In the United Nations definition, a Culture of Peace is a set of
Personal value- statement, attitudes, ways of life that reject violence and p
This philosophical belief system underpins how I conduct my personal and professional life. As a feminist, I believe the personal is political and when I design and facilitate my training programmes on gender amongst different communities, I use the Buddhist values of individuals as part of a community to facilitate peace building. In our group meetings, we discuss the Buddhist concepts of peace and how it relates to our lives. I have on occasions lead the discussions on peace building and how this concept can be integrated into the lives of young adults. I am a role model for the young adults in my group as a mother, an academic and activist for peaceful change. I participate in the Victory over Violence programme but the programme is lead by the youth of SGI.div

Professional life
In my professional life as a gender trainer and researcher, I combine my Buddhist beliefs with a rights framework. I often draw on the experience of the violence of South African life – especially violence against women and children to illustrate how a legitimate government can win the support of the majority of citizens to build a more peaceful life. In my workshops I draw on participants’ life experiences to illustrate how to encourage a more gender friendly workplace. Often women who have been subjected to different forms of violence ridicule sections of my presentations because they lack the confidence to believe that they can be their own agents of change. Some men have accused me of fomenting conflict in the group or in their homes by promoting the concepts of equality, democracy and women’s rights. Men participate in groups using patriarchal values, language and experiences believing that they are entitled to be the head of the household or leader of the group. Through group activities, they are taught to consider other ways of interacting with women. Depending on the group, I have used games, dancing, laughter, songs, learning contracts and academic texts of how adults learn to diffuse conflict situations. I believe that I have the ability to shift participants’ viewpoints. Topics of religion, culture and traditions are taboo topics in many communities but using gender as a vehicle for transformation, the discussions in workshops address the difficult subjects for participants to share experiences.

Dear Sharon
Thanks for your comments. The research work you are pursuing has great relevance not only for south africa but africa continent. My observation on gender participation is that only 2-3 percent of participants in our professional bachelor and master programs are women.

May god bring sanity and peace in the continent.

Regards.
