ANPeJ is fully engaged in conflict transformation and peace building in communities across Nigeria. ANPeJ also engages in systems designs for dispute resolution in institutions both private and public and this includes mediation, arbitration, conciliation and other ADR mechanisms. We also engage in media production as a veritable vehicle for promoting peace. We are consultants on conflict transformation, dispute resolution, peace building, communication strategies, and the like.

I had worked on conflict resolution and peace building in some conflict-prone local government areas and communities such as Agege (Iyana Ipaja-Alimoso axis), Mushin (Idi Araba), Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye, Ikosi-Isheri-Agboyi-Ketu (Mile 12), and Kosofe. These are areas I know very well. Of course there are other areas that need attention. This is not to say that there are no peaceful areas and communities in Lagos State. Of course there are. Besides, Governor Babatunde Fashola is doing a whole lot in an attempt to uproot the causes of poverty. And that is a direct attack on conflict too.

The focus of my organization's work happens to revolve around conflict areas or communities. We have set up structures to manage such conflicts and develop conflict transformation strategies to deal with conflicts.

We can do more to bring about lasting peace and peaceful co-existence amongst our people. Rotarian Tijani, do you have some ideas on how we can build lasting peace in Lagos, Nigeria and Africa? Please, we shall be pleased to have such ideas. Again, we can be part of your concerns too. We work for peace.

Thank you for taking interest in what we do and getting across to me. Best regards.

GuluWalk is an initiative started by two Canadians to highlight the plight of Acholi children in northern Uganda who used to trek each night to town centers in the districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Pader – for fear of being maimed, raped, abducted or even killed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel paramilitary group that has been operating in northern Uganda since 1987.

Each night, tens of thousands of children referred to as "night commuters", ranging between the ages of 3 and 17, walk up to 20 kilometers (12.45 miles) from Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Camps to larger towns, especially Gulu, in search of safety from the LRA. It is estimated that around 20,000 children have been abducted by the LRA since 1987 for use as soldiers and sex slaves.Every year over 22 countries participates in this event.

Dear Gbemi,

Thank you for your comments and questions.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign country sustained by its own resources, export and import goods, as well as international investment. The economy has been completely ruined during the war of aggression during the early 1990's, but recovery is underway.
In regards to the conflict, the war was not fought between two ethnic groups. It was a war of aggression marked by the international recognition of Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence from the former communist country- Yugoslavia. At the time the republic of Serbia and Montenegro militarily supported the local Bosnian Serb paramilitary forces. The force of nationalism and mythology was instrumental in carrying out ethnic-cleansing and genocide against the Bosnian- Muslim population. The war was not between different ethnic rivalries, as all people of Bosnia and Herzegovina have a common ancestry - primarily Slavs.

At the end of the war, after approximately 200,000 people dead, 2 million displaced and the worst atrocities committed in Europe after the Second World War, the role of NGO's was to help the victims in the process of recovery- if that was possible for some victims at all. Today, NGo's are working on a number of efforts- reconciliation, helping the displaced to return to their homes, re-socialization, and democratic institution building.

BAACBH, the organization I work for is advocating on behalf of the Bosnian-American community making sure that their voices are heard as U.S. citizens and victims of war of aggression.

Best of luck with your future endeavors.

Dear Gbemi - thank you for your comments - and all of your questions. The violation of human rights all over the world, as you observe in Africa and as I observed in Palestine - is tragic. And I concur with you that part of the answer lies in the election of governments that will not allow this to continue. My own small effort in this domain is to educate those I know about what I have observed and learned and to also write to my legislators and let them know what I expect of them. In addition I stand in non-violent solidarity with those afflicted by occupation or injustice.

I regret that I do not have the kinds of connections you are looking for. I am just in the process of getting my own business off the ground. In fact, I will likely need to remove myself from this forum so as to focus my energies on my work!

In terms of why so many relationships fall apart - I have no easy explanations. Again, my observations are that people lose their heartfelt connections to one another as human beings - and then justify going forward taking negative actions in "retaliation". This can happen in divorce, in the community, in families, etc. Finding ways to re-connect people, to untangle and heal the hurt relationships is part of what I do.

Good luck to you in your work.
Linda

I enjoyed your comments regarding globalization and the quote regarding the 2 percent of the worlds richest men controlling all the worlds wealth. Africa has been trying so hard to establish legitimate governments under the the most horrific conditions to include mass human rights violations the direct result of decolonization which left the country dazed and confused.....I have hope for such a determined and intelligent people!
