Mariana Katzarova is the Senior Adviser on Anti-Trafficking Issues at the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in Warsaw. Prior to joining the OSCE/ODIHR in February 2011, Ms Katzarova was the Adviser on Trafficking at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. During her time at OHCHR, Ms Katzarova initiated and led the development of the Commentary on the Recommended Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights and Human Trafficking, launched in December 2010.

Before joining OHCHR in 2007, Mariana Katzarova worked as a human rights adviser at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and was the researcher on Russia and the former Soviet Union at Amnesty International in London for 10 years. In 2006, Ms Katzarova found RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in WAR), a UK-based international charity, which supports women and girl survivors, and women human rights defenders from areas of war and armed conflict. RAW in WAR also presents the annual Anna Politkovskaya Award for women human rights defenders from war and conflict in the world, who stand for the victims of this conflict, often at great personal risk (www.rawinwar.org).

Ms Katzarova graduated from Sofia National University and Columbia University in New York and trained in international human rights and humanitarian law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Originally from Bulgaria, she was a founder of the first independent newspaper in Bulgaria in 1989, called “Democracy”.
