Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
I am currently working in Kenya and am experiencing the first-hand affects of the post-election violence from 2007. I am quite angered that the Kenyan government has failed to introduce or implement any peace and reconiliation programs at the national or local levels. It is essential to introduce such programs, especially beginning with the youth in school, to create an environment of peace, respect, and tolerance.

There are many conflicts in the world that are addressed reactively rather than pro-actively; peace education is an essential proactive intervention that is underutilized and therefore I want to learn as much as I can about this strategy.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you (or your organization) have direct and significant expertise
Kenya
What is your current country of residence (or location of your organization)?
Kenya/ USA
What is your current job (and organization) and/or where and what field are you studying?
Education Centre for Women in Development- Kenya, Education for the Future Foundation- Kenya/USA
What is your personal or organizational website?
http://www.ecwd.org, www.educationforthefuturefoundation.org
Which are your primary skills areas(or the primary skill areas of your organization)?
Advocacy, Research, Training

Hi, Lydia. Hope you are well. Been a while since we communicated last before you left Kenya. Have identified another agency to work with in Kenya? Am currently an intern with International Peace Support Training Centre, located at the department of defence -Karen kenya, ibet you know the place . The centre deals with training of military, police and civilian who are yet to be deployed to different countries.
Perhaps in future you may consider applying for an intern in such an environment.

Otherwise am fine . Keep in touch.

Hi Lydia!
No I have not yet worked in Africa or even served in Peace Corps there... my PC service was in far eastern edge of Ukraine. I wanted to learn Russian since I was in 4th grade + knew I wanted to be long term in Africa so if I were ever going to learn it, then it would have to be now so I chose eastern Ukraine when I applied.
Concerning Africa, I have been curious about it for quite a while + when I got to college, as most ppl do at some point or another I think, I became interested in Africa + in 2004 I decided I wanted to hike Kili. So... I saved in college + decided to do this as a celebration of completing my PC service-- went to Kenya for 3 weeks + Tanzania for 1week. It was SUCH an amazing experience and I knew for sure that I wasn't just being idealistic wanting to work there but can actually see myself living/working there permanently :-D

Yeah I' looking forward to returning to school-- I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm running out the door to go on a hike so I'll write again later to tell you about my summer. In the meantime what are you up to now besides job searching??... and Good Luck with your search.

Hi Lydia,

Thanks. I enjoy doing peace building work in the rural areas. It is not enough to speak on behalf of the needy, one has to be part of them as they tackle their daily challenges. It is however very important to know who you are dealing with. There are brokers/gate keepers even in the rural areas who can prevent you from reaching the grass root. About local tribunal and Hague---there is room for both processes. Impunity has been such a big obstacle in Kenya. It is impossible for the current politicians to crack down on impunity without international oversight. It is not in their interests to do so. It is a pity that Kenya is being baby sat by foreign institutions. May be it is a price for failure of governance and institutional reforms.

Hello, Lydia, you are truly a kenya. Going by your profile i can trace your passion for our country, concerning your question on my research project, its purely interesting discovering how different countries have wrestled with reconciliation and the dilemma between pursuing amnesty and forgiveness or justice.
From the onset of our path to conflict recovery and transformation it was clear justice was to be pursued something pursued by international community but the political elite are so engraved into protectint the status quo since majority are neither clean.

However, the issue of setting up a local tribunal versus the hague option , the distance one appears ideal-the hague, otherwise local tribunal will rejuvenate more tensions , polarization and ethnic segmetation-an opportunity our politician have explored excellently for their selfish rather hurting survival. in my opinion our parliament has dominated kenya reform agenda and unfortunately the much awaited cross cutting reforms will not be kenyan preferred choice but politician reforms.
am at pain brainstorming how kenyans can be fully educated, because that appears to be the best avenue out of the cyclical conflict bondage.

Lydia, what are your approach while working with the women, i would be glad to meet you and share with me your activities in sectoral approach to peacebuilding- the women whom i believe are integral vehicles of transformation.

Please let me know how we can meet if you are based in nairobi, am currently along riverside along chiromo road with a international research firm -synovate. am coordinating a project TOP 100 MEDIUMS SIZED BUSINESS SURVEY-fOR KENYA & UGANDA. SEE www.kenyatop100.co.ke

Dear friend,

On March 21st 2009 a World Wide Hug Party will take place in clubs and galleries all over the world. We invite every city, village or town to join this initiative. Will you organise a World Wide Hug Party in your hometown?

We are all part of the collective consciousness, in which everything is connected with the universal energy. We are able to heal our planet and unite everybody in peace and tolerance. So let us demonstrate our unity, let us show our fellow-human beings that we all are One, no matter what kind of religion, race or culture we represent. We are able to love and respect each other.

In the evening of March 21st in Oceania, New Zealand and Australia people will start the Hug which will go around the world in 24 hours, the biggest chain of peace that you can imagine.

The idea is as simple as it is effective: just hug! When we hug each other we open our heart and we can feel the loving energy pounding between us. When we open our heart we unite our energy.

Be part of this event!
Be a witness of this event!

All the events will be broadcasted through the internet, to watch, to be watched, to hug and to be hugged.

On the website www.worldwidehugparty.org you get information about how to organise your own World Wide Hug Party, how to add your video stream on internet and how you can watch the other events all over the world.

Go to:
