Karen Volker is Managing Director of Volker Solutions, an independent consulting firm based in Washington, DC. Ms. Volker has over 25 years of experience as a Foreign Service Office with the US Department of State. She focuses on connecting and supporting organizations involved in promoting pluralism and human rights and/or countering violence (and violent extremism). She is passionate about her work and looks forward to connecting with others in the Peace and Collaborative Development Network.

Immediately prior to retiring from the State Department in January 2012, Ms. Volker was the Chief of Staff to the Special Coordinator for Middle East Transitions. From 2009-2011, she was the Deputy and then Director of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), a grant-giving program in the State Department focused on supporting the development of pluralistic, participatory, and prosperous countries in the Middle East and North Africa. MEPI's focus is on supporting the development of a vibrant civil society. From 2005-2009, Ms. Volker focused on the challenge of countering violent extremism, both in the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff and in the Office of the Under Secretary for Public Affairs and Public Diplomacy. From 1988-2005, Ms. Volker held a variety of positions in Washington and overseas with a significant focus on coordinating foreign assistance (including as the U.S. Stability Pact Coordinator from 2001-2003) and the European Union (including as the Deputy Director of the EU Office).
