Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
I was appalled by the 2003 bombing of Iraq. It was the birthplace of Abraham. It was like bombing your grandmother's house. It should never be done without a very good reason and we still haven't been given one. I realized the world is in significant peril. I and thousands more need to step up in meaningful ways.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
Karen Dickman is a professional mediator with an extensive background as a civil rights activist and minister. She helped organize West Virginia’s first two Pride Parades. As a lobbyist she was instrumental in preventing “Defense of Marriage Act” language from passing in West Virginia despite numerous separate attempts during her tenure there. Her leadership stopped the reversion process in Charlottesville, VA which would have ended the LGBT civil rights statute in the city code. She was a founding member of the Chicago AntiBashing Network which advocated for victims of hate crimes and publicized the crimes when they were otherwise ignored.
She spent 20 years working with people with AIDS. Her work in mental health and prisons caught the attention of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government resulting in an “Innovations in Government Award” and an invitation to the White House in 2005. She has been a guest speaker at seven colleges and universities, including the University of Virginia, DePaul, and most recently, Harvard.
Rev. Dickman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Wheeling College (now Wheeling Jesuit University). She continued into graduate studies in Criminal Justice at Rutgers University. She later completed the graduate program at Samaritan Institute of Religious Studies as a prerequisite for ordination. She spent the next ten years doing community organizing and opening new churches for Metropolitan Community Church.

Hi, Karen. it was a pleasure seeing your photo. i was imagining who is Karen. i appreciate your openness. How is lesbianism taken in USA? In Kenya its there but people operate not openly. Karen i respect people stand because i believe there must be a philosophy that informs a persons choice.
Allow me to ask you whether lesbians get married? if yes how do they cope with marriege? Concerning kenyas religions, there are various faith groups including major ones catholic and protestants. others are anglican church, Methodist, Islam, Buddhism, jehovah witness, jehovah israel, among others denominations that are even initiated by whites like calvary church.
You are still welcome to Kenya, there still many liberals not reached or had an opportunity. which is your specific religion?
would love to know alot from you Karen.
Regards.

Hello, Karen. Thank you for you prompt feedback. i feel like i would come for you and take you round to kenya. as an African and a Kenyan too, i would confirm to you that women are the ones turning round conflict transformations in Africa. There are very many women doing post conflict reconstruction and community capacity building.
Too, am particularly concerned with the laxity of the religious leaders in kenya for lacking the stewardship in championing reconciliation, yet Kenyans are very religious and strict followers which is a great opportunity to change the conflicts perceptions.
Concerning whites as colonizers in Kenya we treasure you as we have continued to partner in many projects, many white married to blacks, numerous thousands of tourists from US and 97% of tourists are whites.
Am confident, with you your God given capacity to initiate projects and advocacy programs that have have managed to turn things around(referring to your profile) you have a great potential to turn things around. The government is struggling now to constitute a committee to spearhead and undertake the implementation of truth, justice and reconciliation commission and i believe an initiative can do a great deal in assisting the marginalized group especially the internally displaced people, slum dwellers, children or women.

Madam, i sincerely extend a in invitation to Kenya for a fact finding and you would totally look forward to extending your stay. Also as young professional in the field and passionate about changing the society for better, i would be keen to learn from you on how i can initiate a foundation or capacity building forum. The bigggest problem in Kenya and Africa is lack of civic education and self empowerment. Many a times i have been wrestling with the idea of registering a forum for undertaking civic education either targeting schools, interfaith groups, or women. i even tried to figure out a name "Kenya peace awareness forum for reconciliation" .
i look forward to having more discussion with you and looking forward one day to meeting you and championing a programme.
Regards.
william

Hello Karen, am william from kenya and thrilled by your profile and contribution in spreading the Gods gospel. am a masters student undertaking international conflict management at university of Nairobi. its great noting you are a mediator an area that we totally lack in kenya. we almost got into irreversible stalemate during 2007 post election conflict until kofi annan came to mediate but still not healed .
This is an area i would be eager to explore for my Ph.d after i graduate end of this year. i trust you can be my mentor and advisor on this field.
its good and blessing connecting through this network.

stay well , we keep in touch.
welcome to Kenya.
