Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
A feeling that more needs to be done and that certain narratives were not being heard!
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
Jeremy Rinker is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Though his doctoral studies have been in conflict analysis and resolution, Jeremy has a Master of Arts degree in Asian Religion from the University of Hawaii and has taught comparative religions classes at Northern Virginia Community College and Marymount University. Long interested in the nexus between religion and conflict, Jeremy has also taught a course entitled Violence and Values at the Lutheran Colleges Washington Semester Program in Arlington, VA, as well as, various classes in the Conflict Analysis and Resolution (CAR) undergraduate program at George Mason University’s Fairfax campus.

Jeremy’s research on the 50 year-old Ambedkar Buddhist movement in Western India is a provocative approach to understanding the often un-explored connections between social justice and conflict resolution. On his own initiative and resources, he has taken two field visits to India for data collection. These experiences have allowed him to weave a rich set of respondents’ narratives into his dissertation as well as into his teaching repertoire. He has presented some initial findings and analysis at professional conferences and is developing print ready manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals. In the Spring of 2009, along with other colleagues supported by Mason’s Center for Global Studies and the Colonial Academic Alliance, Jeremy is organizing and presenting at a major conference on Globalization in India to be hosted at George Mason University.

Jeremy’s currently works part-time as a Grants and Program Officer at the Salam Institute for Peace and Justice while he completes the writing of his dissertation. His other professional experience includes being a Peace Corps volunteer (Kazakhstan ’95-’97), working with various international NGOs including the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and CitiHope International, and working/volunteering in the field of restorative justice and community conferencing. Jeremy is married with a 22-month old son named Kylor.
