Profile Information

Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
Batton is the current director of Global Issues Resource Center at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. The Center's mission focuses on the international exchange of best practices to help enhance the capacity within the community to address social challenges. The Center achieves this mission by convening policy makers, academics, and practitioners to provide global perspective, explore emerging trends, and design sustainable, multi-cultural solutions which address challenges in our community and our world. She is currently co-coordinating the development of a certificate program at the college in Conflict Management and Peace Studies, the first at a community college in Ohio.

Batton is the former director of education programs for the state government office, the Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management in Columbus, Ohio, USA (1998 – 2006). As the Education Director, she was responsible for strategic planning to meet the needs of all of Ohio’s schools (approximately 4,000) and universities (approximately 52 teacher training colleges) including coordinating and designing state-wide conflict resolution education (CRE) programming by providing grants, training, technical assistance, evaluation, and resource development in partnership with other state government, and state-wide youth serving agencies.

Batton has worked on a number of national initiatives funded by the United States Department of Education (USDE) including serving on the executive leadership team the Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE) project, and serving on the advisory committee of the CRE Web site which serves as a clearinghouse of information and resources at www.creducation.org. She is the co-designer of a distance learning course, Managing & Resolving Conflicts Effectively in Schools and Classrooms, for the USDE and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and was the Conference Coordinator for the National Conference on CRE in 2004 & 2005.

Batton worked on a number of international initiatives including providing leadership for The Organization of American States (OAS) Advisory Board for the Inter-American Program on Education for Democratic Values and Practices with Ministry of Education Officials from the 34 countries of the Americas, and Co-Chairs the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), Conflict and Peace Education Reference Group. She organized three international conferences on CRE with funding from NGOs, INGOs, state, national, and international governmental agencies including the OAS, UNDP, USIP, and the European Centre for Conflict Prevention (ECCP) and served as one of three principals that organized the CRE/PE working group for the GPPAC/United Nations international symposium in July 2005 on the Role of Civil Societies in the Prevention of Armed Conflict. These conferences included convening governmental and non-governmental education organizations at subsequent education policy meetings from around the world. Batton provided training, presentations, and consultation for teachers, policy makers, and youth serving professionals on the topic of CRE in countries including Costa Rica, Cyprus, Guatemala, the Ukraine, Serbia, Trinidad, Northern Ireland, Colombia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Australia.

HI Jennifer!
I spoke with Ellen .....from a cc in Illinois. She is on the PJSA Board. There is one other at large member, Brian Trautman, from Berkshire CC in Mass. We spoke of the SIG and a presence at the PJSA but given that the next conference is in Manitoba, I'm doubtful that many of us can make it. Too expensive. So....let's try to make this site our virtual place to meet and discuss.
Peace, Abbie
