Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
I developed interest in peace & conflict resolution through studies. I am a second year master's student at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and a prospect graduate of 2009. As an intern at UPEACE Africa Programme, Addis Ababa, I have had an opportunity for more exposure and interest in the subject. The variety of problems in Africa as well serve as a motivating factor.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I obtained a BA in history form Addis Ababa University, AAU in 2005. (English was my minor subject). I worked on a short-term project which involved providing assistance for a book on contemporary African History. I then worked for two years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching adults from beginner to advanced levels in private owned ESL schools. I also worked as a full time English and History teacher at primary and secondary levels at a British International School in Addis Ababa.

I am currently an intern at UPEACE Africa Programme Office based in Addis Ababa and I work directly under the Programme Officer.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you (or your organization) have direct and significant expertise
Africa, Ethiopia. Basically, I have not yet had any concrete practical experience on the field. Peace education is very much limited to refugee camps in Ethiopia and is administered through UNHCR and other NGOs which work alongside a government organization. However, I assisted in collecting data for a Traditional Methods of Conflict Resolution of Conflict report in 2008 for ZOA Refugee Care (Dutch NGO) supported by the organization where I am currently interning—the UPEACE Africa Programme. Based on that experience, I decided to do my thesis (expecting to graduate from Addis Ababa University July ‘09) on the impact that peace education has had on the refugee community residing in a camp in north Ethiopia, identify the underlying gaps in peace education theory and practice in the context of the camp. And study the lessons that can be learnt from the processes on the camp and make recommendations for integration into the national curriculum and hence the nation’s schooling system.
What is your current country of residence (or location of your organization)?

Need Short-term training Funding information

Dear all,
I am a new comer to this website but have been visiting on and off looking for material to substantiate my study in Peace Education Theory. I am currently engaged with my MA thesis listed on my profile.
In February, I filled in an application for a global peace education training that occurs annually through IIPE (www.iipe.org). This year the training will be held, July 26-August2, 2009 in Budapest, Hungary. The organization has limited finding this year and hence I was accepted to attend but on condition I take care of my own flight expenses and training expenses. The training, accommodation, local transport and food put together comes to a total of $600. The flight from Addis Ababa, where I live to Budapest is about 950 Euros with Lufthansa.
I am trying to look for funding to attend the training locally. If anyone knows of any local or international organizations the engage in such type of funding please send a message to my inbox.

I truly appreciate the time you have invested to read this note and all your help.
Regards,
Edda
