Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
My 16 years in Israel-Palestine had a deep impact on me. My friendships across the lines of these interacting faiths and politics, have been both beautiful and painful to experience what connects yet divides us. Over the last 43 years as I've come to better understand the Palestinian experience I've come to feel a deepening sadness at the alienation and injustices perpetuated by those who see only one side of the story and only their own victimization.

Having been inspired by many people I knew working across the lines in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza I decided to pursue studies in sociology, religion, and more recently in peacebuilding and conflict transformation. In the process I became intrigued by the politics of Jesus and the nonviolent strategies of leaders such as Gandhi, Ghaffar Khan, Martin Luther King, Jr et al. I came to recognize the interconnectedness of many of our faith traditions and the common ground we share as human beings in the quest for the meaning of our existence. Despite the reality of religious differences and the distortions of the central truths and teachings of the prophets that so frequently contribute to conflict, I have become convinced that the central values of compassion, nonviolence, and peacemaking that lie at the heart of our faiths also draw us together as a human family and constitute sacred common ground.

This sense of our common spirituality also led me to the arts, an vocational focus of my work the last 25 years. I have worked in several media including photography, ceramics, sculpture, and multiple media pyrogravure coloree.

Since September of 2001 and particularly as the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanon intensified and deepened my sadness, I have also felt a sense of urgency about the need for peacemaking if we are to survive as a human family. I hope to draw from my experiences in the Middle East, along with my interests in interfaith encounter, development, the arts, and education, to work at peacebuilding.

Hi David,

You have an inspiring exprience as well. I am working at Search for Common Ground, and just started to manage to project on "common Ground journalism". A training program for Israeli and Palesitnian media professionals, funded by the USAID. I am very excited about the project and hope our efforts will bring a little change in the way the conflict is portrayed in the Israeli and Palesitnian media with all the current challenges.
Salam.

Dear David,
It seems we're both mad fans of the Moral Imagination. I've pimped my copy out more times than I know, and follow it's teachings religiously--I even based my master's thesis on it. Crazy huh?

Your bio sounds amazing. I'm glad there are those like you. My mom and dad are Armenian, and grew up in Jerusalem in the old city, Armenian Quarter of course. All my relatives talk about how when they lived there, they had friends from all communities, and religion was never a barrier to relationships. It simply made people more interesting.

Now that I live in Lebanon, I hear similar stories from my relatives here--how it never was an issue, but now it really is.

Peace to you.

Hi David,

Thanks for the motivation. Yes I have read JPL's book Moral Imagination. He taught us that book!!! It was AMAZING. WOW. I read it all the time when I feel stuck in the complexities...

I know Barry through the Caux Scholars Program in Switzerland. I was a Caux Scholar in 2004 and he taught me as well. GREAT program. Barry is wonderful. We met again last year in Switzerland for a reunion. Please tell him I said hello.

Good luck with your practicum! Sounds great.

Where are you from in the US?

Well I come from a small country (4million population) that has 18 different religious sects. So can you imagine the social dynamics??? Unfortunately in my experience in Lebanon, I haven't YET witnessed religion being a pillar that really unites people. It's sad and frustrating. But I'm still hopeful and do my best through my work, to provide space to foster tolerance and acceptance. I have seen small success stories, which led me to write that piece...i hope it is a useful reference!!

Does Barry Hart teach you?
Can you tell me more about what your practicum and focus on Abrahamic Traditions is about?
