Profile Information

What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
My personal experience living in refugee camps, escaping bullets and enduring suffering at war time has led me to believe that preventing war from happening at first place is what can bring peace and security to people.
At 17 years old, my father was kidnapped and executed as a local community leader by rebels. In those few years I watched hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians caught up in dangerous conflicts which take lives.

As a survivor of war, I am committed to advancing the cause of international peace and security around the globe.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
Son of a refugee, Bernard ran from the war in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and settled in Harare, Zimbabwe with his family in 2001. He secured a United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees scholarship to attend a computer Course, and Business Studies at Pro-Theta College in Harare, Zimbabwe and got his advanced Diploma in Computer Science. After the completion of his degree, Bernard interned with the American Embassy, public Affairs Section, Harare Zimbabwe, in the Educational advising center where he was selected to join the Unites States Student Achievers Program (USAP). A program which provides access to higher education for determined, bright, low-income youth, producing highly-skilled educated leaders for tomorrow’s Africa (www.usapglobal.org ).

Bernard secured a prestigious scholarship at a small private school, Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida to pursue his studies in International Relations and Affairs. He served as the student body president at Lynn University in 2007-2008 after he has been president of the International Affairs society at the same institution. Having passion towards political activism, in February 2007, Bernard was appointed the South-East Region Representative for Africa Action Student Network, and serves in the steering committee. Bernard also served as the Regional Director for American for Informed Democracy.

Upon graduation from Lynn University, Bernard is looking forward to attending a graduate school in the field of Conflict Resolution or International Affairs. His conviction is that Africa needs a new chapter, and he looks forward to contributing towards change on the continent, in the world and especially in his native country the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Uganda "Anti-Homosexuality bill": An inside look

It is unfortunate that Uganda takes the road to pass an" Anti-Homosexuality bill" which threatens Liberty and Human Rights in the nation. “If adopted, a Bill further criminalising homosexuality would constitute a significant step backwards for the protection of human rights in Uganda,” a Canadian spokesperson said. (voice-online.co.uk)

Issues of this nature in most African countries need thorough analysis that focuses on cultural implications. The one thing that is certain is that it will take… Continue

Conflict Resolution in the Eastern DRC is suffering from a failure of leadership

After an elected government has been put in place in 2006 led by the current president Joseph Kabila, there were major changes that the government promised including tackling the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo crisis. However, it is not a surprise that to date we see a total disengagement of the DRC government in the peace process. All we are witnessing is the political maneuvering and manipulation of any kind to distract the public opinion. More is needed than just creating a joint mi… Continue

The DRC President, the actual threat for peace in the Eastern Congo.

Four thousands Rwandan troops have just crossed the DRC border in the East by the invitation of the DRC President Joseph Kabila. These troops are forming a joint operation effort with the nonexistent DRC army to root out Rwandan Hutu Militias who operate in the Eastern DRC and whom Kigali has repeatedly claimed to be threat to its security. To many people who haven’t been following the development of the Eastern DRC conflict, this sounds like a good thing to do to bring about peace. However, the… Continue

Conflict mainstreaming

Statesmen and in some cases inter-governmental organizations have been involved a lot in peacebuidling process and conflict resolution. While statesmen can engage in direct talks and negotiations, it is also important to note that engaging other players who are directly involved in a particular conflict, such as the local populations is crucial.

The signing of a cease-fire or peace agreement is a good thing to do. However, the piece of paper handed over to both parties who sign the agreement fo… Continue

That world peace is possible is true. However, those countries pushing for peace must really be sincere in pushing this forward for the sake of the people and not use it as a gambit to enter a country in conflict for a chance to improve their own business designs.

Bernard ! Thanks for your comment. Yes, I'm familiar with Mr. Evans works (who is of course the leading authority on R2P). In fact, one of my ex superiors at UN- Mr. Strauss, who is also a strong proponent of r2p,-- is also working on the subject. However, I did not mention such references in my blog because the aim of my blog is to explain human rights and conflicts in a simple and layman like manner to the non CR and HR people. :)

PS--can i read your paper on rwanda genocide online?
