The power of the myth

It occurred to me after I had posted many blog articles on the lasting impact on my life of moving to Washington, D. C. in the 1960s to partake of the Camelot aura that surrounded JFK, that Camelot is, and always was a mythical place. Then it occurred to me that, on the other hand, if we have no stories and/or myths to capture our imaginings we can often truly be lost.Another…See More

The Pebble Polishing Pouch

A happy thought for today from the New Horizons Small "Zones of Peace" Project.Help me shine is what I ask of you. And, I will give that gift back to you.If you will take time to notice; notice me, notice you, notice us together, you will see; you and me, us and them. We are like pebbles gathered in a pouch; the sand at the ocean front. As we come up against one another, we are polishing, building up the shine, smoothing off the rough spots. Please, if you will, take time to notice; notice me,…See More

Profile Information

Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I am a retired psychotherapist with more than forty years experience in the mental health field. Now a community development and violence prevention coach, consultant and trainer, I am the author of five books in progress, including "The Middle East Crisis In My Backyard" and numerous articles. I also host two radio shows; The Possible Society In Motion Show and Anastasia the Storyteller, and write regular blog articles for two sites; the New Horizons Small “Zones of Peace” Project and Anastasia The Storyteller.

I make my home in the serenity of the mountains above Harpers Ferry where New Horizons has a small retreat center, currently under renovation at this time. I am grateful to be able to live here where I am happily nested with the birds, the trees and the squirrels. I am at my most fulfilled watching the sunset from the deck of my home -- and/or -- sitting around a campfire in the woods telling and listening to stories, especially about building community and peace.

The non-profit organization I founded and head, New Horizons Support Network, Inc., does community development and violence prevention training, based on principles we call the "Cultural Mediation Paradigm." The main focus of our work is behind the scenes coaching and consulting with key leaders of groups or organizations, generally culminating in community conversations that are specially designed based on what we learn from working with these key leaders.

Lemon out of lemonade, the lemon appears before me, like im the lemon the individual and the lemonade is my affiliation,, which makes my small ME into a huge WE.
so, we need to be willing to solve or go against others.
and the who am i , will give 20 different answers. like with my few answers i would add friend of Anastasia.
i things, if we are willing to add and enlarge our friend list beyond our every differences then only can be the lemonade test good.
few years back , i had a great fighting with one of my best friend cause we were too stubborn in our views that we forgot our friendship and a third party took the chance. well we both understand that later, when we can not be together like we were before. that thing teach me a lot.
im so glade to find you. hope will keep in touch.

hii, after reading your blogs, three things, stuck in my mind or you can say three sentences ,
1. willingness
2. lemon out of lemonade: &
3. who am i , the game.
i was kind of De-touched with the thinking of identity as i was thinking of feminism & anti- militarism!though can not properly figure it out! one problem i have always faced that i can not keep as sequence of my thinking and some times i feel that i can not goo deep into them. and as a result i can not find words to write them all. some times talking with you helps me to do that. i found my lines to think in your words. isn't it strange? we are away from thousand miles and haven't see each others and not even heard our voices. despite all these negative things we are sharing most positive things of our life's. i have very little knowledge and almost have no experience like you. and i was not in the mood to finding out the answer Who am i, or what is my identity...as my just finished graduate life is running good with every possible elements of fun, which can have in Bangladesh! but suddenly , the thing came into my life, and i found that im in such a country and region where the history is about the identity and people are still giving bloods for identity. that things comes in a collective way but our individual identities does a great matter for that.

hii,,,you have the scope to help people who are in need, perhaps i do not have that much of wide scope to help people though im trying in personal level. after studying peace & conflicts studies i got the feeling that peace can be anything. like you are saying about the Nazis inhuman things and what happen in 1971 in Bangladesh though the range was not same but the sufferings were same. and , if some times we get chance to talk with the people who fought in the liberation war in1971, i would say, i saw some kind of tranquility in there face. because, that, most probably only that time all the people of Bangladesh forgot their dividations in very area like, religious, rich-poor even gender differences. though there were few who were supporting West pakistan but the number was nothing in the comparison with the main stream. this never happen again in our country.the present situation is unstable not in the state level but in the personal level. people are losing their tolerance, not respecting others opinions and so many this types of small things are making our personal life's unstable.
in my country, young generations get little chance to work with these issues and if you are a women than it become more difficult. with all this obstacles some of my friends two time went to the periphery area's schools and try to give the sense of peace education among them. experience was wonderful.we learn more from them. how regionalism can be a strong element of conflict and identity i get to know that time more. because, remaining in the same territory when they feel that im BORISALI( Borisal is a district of Bangladesh) than the differences increase. though i think it is important to feel that but in a certain limit.otherwise things can be happen like Cht.
what do you think when in individual level we feel that i should have my own things not sharing with others? do you think only Jerusalem is the conflicting issue between Jews and Muslim?
At 1:24am on July 2, 2010, zerrin afza said…
hii,,
i read you zone of peace blog. it is wonderful.what do you think about the importance of identity in protracted conflict?as,i can see in my part of world, in south asia, there are so many protracted conflicts, two of them are internationally established.1) ethnic conflicts of Sri lanka, 2) kashmir issue between India- Pakistan. and in both case identity is an major issue. and in both case state party and two track diplomacy was tremendously failed.

once i got a chance to visit Pakistan, though there was very few chance to met with the mass people, but the little i got chance ,when i asked them what they think about kashmir? the only and one answer with one major issue like religion , kashmir is Pakistan's as there 93% peoples are mulims. and they do not dare to give blood for kashmir.so, how we can solve this type of identity crisis?and there are few students in our Dhaka University who are from Kashmir, if you ask them, how do you feel comfortable to give your national identity?the simple answer is as Kashmiri!no indian or pakistani.
and hopefully you know how sad the story of sri lanka. i think, when our collective identities overlapped with our individual identities and we feel that to protect my origin i need to marge with a group than our collectives grow much stronger. but what makes them that much of strong that i would not have any idea of good or bad?

WHAT makes this What?

hi, i just read it in your blog but due to some internet problem i am unable to comment there so im writing here, thanks a lot. and your previous writing on Middle east crisis also give me some points to think again about my Identity. and to me most interestingly i am a Muslim. where we are talking about our identity in internet our fellow brothers are fights with each other and killing one another and they are put into the grave in the same way. And same groups of bloods ,A, B, AB o O negative/positive they are having. we have a difference in our religious system only but i don't think in Jews way of life God do not ordered to kill others. so, why we are doing this? only to establish our Identities
At 4:54pm on June 30, 2010, zerrin afza said…
oh, it would be nice if i got chance to have a direct connection with the people.please use my name and contact,no problem from me.
discussing with you would make me clear and help me a lot to write sometime good. though i have a very little study and know very little but i want to think about the issue deeply. i want to understand when people resist and want to protest their own identity?is only deprivation is responsible for that?when individual identities become collective identities and want something big,in state level?why don't big powers and political giving importance on that issue ,where they know this is most important for very human being.

and one interesting thing is to me, the people who once struggle for their identity, they also injure others identity when they established their identity.like in Bangladesh, our leader seikh mujibur rahman and others followed by him denied the recolonization process of the ingenious people. in south asia nepal, bhutan ,srilanka, myanmar every state has the problem.but don't know why the state party or the related authority do not willing to solve the problem.
i hope we can give a shape to these questions.

hiiii,,,,im glad to know that my untrimmed words inspire you that much. i already read your article.like the Jews & Muslims conflict...our south asia is also suffering from the same injury. and as far i can remember both problems started in the same year 1948. do not you think that divide and rule policy is owned by very few people of the world and the sufferers of that policy is the whole world.you have a great years of experience.im very poor in that area. and basically i never though of Identity as an issue like the way im thinking about it now .you know when 1st i started to think of it?i have a friend who is a poet.and once he wrote in a paper just 1 lines,,like...EChe kore mukhos pore sara shohor chose berai ( Wish to travel the whole city wih a mask). n i put it as my status in my facebook account.and you know,,,there were more than 20 comments. than i started to think deeply about the line,,
i am from, Peace & conflict studies, i just completed my graduation and doing intern where i took the Topic 'identity & conflict in south asia'¬ only my country Bangladesh...but also there is same problem,,in Balochistan of Pakistan...they influence me more. they have a history, separate identity since the period of Alexander but from 1948 they were bound to marge with Pakistan. and Balochistan is the less developed province of pakistan though the natural resources of pakistan all most all of them comes from that area. and,,even when Pakistan tested its nuclear weapons they chose Balochistan. can you imagine?

if some one did something like this with me,,than would i ever want to tie any type of connection with him?my ans is NO. i have my own origin and even complete separate territory than why would i took ur burdens?
if im wrong please correct me. and i wuld love to talk about this with you and took the advances:)
