What motivated you (or your organization) to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
Peace and conflict resolution are integral to a less violent and more prosperous planet which ultimately benefits all mankind... that should motivate everyone. My favorite Alex Noble quote sums up my motivation perfectly: If I have been of service, if I have glimpsed more of the nature and essence of ultimate good, if I am inspired to reach wider horizons of thought and action, if I am at peace with myself, it has been a successful day.
I believe in a life of service to others and enjoy using my advocacy and research skills to that end. My background is complex and I've been fortunate to have many global experiences that have only increased my desire to impact positive change.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself or the work of your organization (no more than 3 paragraphs)
My particular interests are the gendered impacts of disasters/war and the social and cultural ramifications of conflict on the family and community. I have an avid and voracious appetite for social justice and improved equality for vulnerable populations.
Current research interests include engendered constitutional jurisprudence, economic sanctions, Ugandan politics and as always- gender and disasters.
Other than my CSR job in Manhattan I'm an advisor for the Honorable Chairman Norbert Mao of Gulu, Uganda on his peace keeping agenda and run for president in 2011. Standing behind leaders such as Norbert Mao is the most direct way to put action into words. Whether you are writing letters to your local congressional leader or helping the future president of Uganda-I believe it is our responsibility to do something for positive change. Everyday!

Northern Uganda has suffered immensely from the civil war and the road to recovery is long, with the IDPs suffering greatly, particularly the children. Anyone with research in this area- please feel free to contact me, meaningful collaboration and idea sharing is always welcome.

Sanctions against Iran: The Dead Horse of Foreign Policy Tools?

Imagine the cover of the New York Times with the dramatic headline, “UNITED STATES DECLARES SANCTIONS!” riling emotions of readers everywhere. A statement regarding a declaration or act of war may evoke such feelings, but it is not likely that much attention would be paid to a headline about yet another case of the US imposing sanctions on a target country. Such a headline can only be seen in the warped imagination of those who understand the dramatic and often dire effects of economic sanctions… Continue

Uganda: ‘Anti-Homosexuality’ Bill Threatens Liberties and Human Rights Defenders

AS REQUESTED MOHAMED- A REPOST:
Proposed Provisions Illegal, Ominous, and Unnecessary

OCTOBER 15, 2009

This Alien Legacy
This draft bill is clearly an attempt to divide and weaken civil society by striking at one of its most marginalized groups. The government may be starting here, but who will be next?

Scott Long, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch
(Kampala) - The draft "Anti-Homosexuality Bill" introduced on October… Continue

Uganda proposes death penalty for HIV positive gays

While I'm not a proponent of international aid dollars being tied to morality clauses that inhibit cultural practices, I stand behind the countries who will refuse aid to Uganda if it accepts death/life in prison as a feasible way to punish homosexuals. This witch-hunt cannot be tolerated. Leaders who support this must be questioned so that they can explain why one constituent has less value than another.

This bill must be abolished. Such draconian laws threaten all of us, not just Ugand… Continue

Norbert Mao Speaks to Irish Parliament on HIV/AIDS

"AIDS REMAINS AFRICA'S BIGGEST CHALLENGE"

Speech by Norbert Mao MP to the gathering of EU Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees in the Irish Parliament. Reprinted from the Hansard of the Irish Parliament

Mr. Norbert Mao:

"The previous speakers Father Lambert, the Ambassador and Ms Marika Fahlen, our friend from UNAIDS, seem to read from the Book of Lamentations. I will read from the Book of Genesis: when God caught Adam and Eve violating his commandment he decided the time had come to distribu… Continue

I understand the extreme measures you are talking about
in legislation agains homsexuals has been in part generated
by conservative Christians in the US
If they would really stand by their faith they would allow
for these to repent not be murdered

Faith makes demands of ourselves
Religion places those demands others
