About the Campaign

The Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) was launched at the Hague Appeal for Peace conference in May 1999.

The Need
The Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) seeks to develop the capacities, in teachers and learners, to face challenges of unprecedented proportion: the continued development of weapons of mass destruction, armed conflicts between states and ethnic groups, the spread of racism, gender inequality, community violence, the huge and widening gap between the rich and the poor throughout the globalized economy, massive violations of human rights and the degradation of the environment.

How the Campaign Works
The Global Campaign for Peace Education seeks to foster a culture of peace in communities around the world. It has two goals:

1) First, to build public awareness and political support for the introduction of peace education into all spheres of education, including non-formal education, in all schools throughout the world.

2) Second, to promote the education of all teachers to teach for peace.

The Campaign is a non-formal network comprised of formal and non-formal educators and organizations, each working in their own unique ways to address the goals above. This form allows Campaign participants to focus their energies towards meeting the goals and needs of their constituents - while at the same time promoting and making visible the growing global network of educators working for peace. The Campaign helps to facilitate the exchange of ideas, strategies and best practices through a monthly newsletter and also seeks to connect peace educators via our online database.

"Vasudev kutukbkam" entire world is a family, this was a teaching of our indian culture and traditional.
we created countries, boundaries,religions,cast,race for a genuine reason or a false reasons for any reason.but this the time to realize that we are one and we naturally interconnected with each other ,which we can just realize by watching inhale and exhale of breaths the source is same ,without any discrimination,religion, boundaries, equally for all living life of universe .When we understand this simple thing then we must understand how our and other's life is equally important, valuable ,respectable .we should follow the nature's rule ,non violence .peace ,god has given us a human life not for destruction but for look after the wellbeing of all living life.

Comment by Pyana Mwamba Symphorien on November 6, 2010 at 5:47am: If the culture of peace has to be promoted in our contemporary world, peace education actitivies or experiences might go beyong the boundaries of schools or universities and embrasse the society as whole. This implies increasing awarness on peace education therories and practices at school or universities; but also at the levels of family, community, municipality, etc. This is beacause violent behaviour anywhere (at school) may affect peace every (family or community). Beyond teachers' peace education study groups, I would for instance imagine or call upon parents peace education study groups. Public educational policy, political campain, seminars and workshops at the various stages of the society are as well critical in contributing to the goals of the campain.

One of the main challenges to the advancement and promotion of peace education is including peace education therories and practices in schools and universities curriculum, but also developing public peace education projetcts and programs that embrace the majority of the population. In this vein, political will from national governements and increased engagement from private civil society groups (NGOs, churches, etc) are needed.

Yes all solutions to be reached from grassroots level because informal education its better than formal education.

Iam smile as member in this initiative !
First we must believe that in the life every one can do something for the peace culture regardless to deferences in our efforts and struggle but the main problem how can feel this value and be tolerance with our selfs to share our vision work with other in our communities through awareness programmes on civil and constitutional rights , I think this is first step for each individual to get him aware about civil role in his country and how to be as defender on his human rights . So if we need to fostering peace culture we must concern about civic education programmes through promote , support and advocate civil initiatives networks.
Finally, you know if there is no democracy behavior there is no peace and security because democracy statement say ( No Thing For Me Without Me !)

Education is normally regarded is the Key to any problem that man has created on this Planet. If people are educated to understand the fundamental problems of hunger, starvation, terrorism, economic crisis and many more, I do not think there will be problems left to solve.
The inequalities that are exhibited around the globe are inhibited in our ways of thinking in the context of sharing. If we are not ready to share the total knowledge, resources in more a horizontal manner by creating economic, social and political decisions, giving every individual the possibility to have a decent living standard.
We can never have Peace if people go hungry and wrong decisions are imposed on civil society to satisfy the few. the absence of real democracy and the rule of law, transparency, economic and political incentives global.
In Africa Peace education can be the best solution even if it takes time to give effect in society. If people are educated to be able to read and write, most the problems faced in Africa and the world will be reduced tremendously.
