PCDN Members Required to Choose a Membership Option (Free option Remains Available for those unable to make a payment)

Update on June 6

Dear Colleagues

We wanted to provide an update on PCDN Membership. The PCDN network has helped impact thousands of individuals and organizations around the world to help connect, inspire, provide sources of funding, scholarships, training and much more. To date out of our 25,200 members around the world, only 570 (which is less than 2.2%) have contributed to the network). While we are grateful for all of the payments to date,  to sustain our work we rely on your support and would like to increase member support to at least 40% of the entire membership. Please consider  paying what you can in any amount ranging from $1 and up.

If you cannot make a payment please read the process for free renewal accounts (we hope the system is now working properly).

Regarding Requests for Free Renewal Accounts on PCDN (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)

As outlined we strongly encourage everyone to make a payment if you can (in any amount starting at $1) to support PCDN. If you are unable to make a payment either due to lack of funds, lack of credit card or unable because online financial transactions in your country are difficult then please read the following steps:

1) New Members - If you are a new member, then please follow all the steps to register. When you first login after your account is approved go to the payment page and enter 0 as the payment amount. This will give you a free membership for 12 months (which can be renewed in the future).

2) Renewing Members Requesting Free Accounts - Please do consider making a payment in any amount.  If this is not possible please follow the steps below:

a) Please wait until your account has expired (do not attempt to renew/request free request prior to this)

b) Sign out of PCDN and then sign back in (this step is important)

c) Once you log back in, he Payment Page should show up (again only if your account has already expired).

d) Follow the steps and choose 0 for payment

e) If this doesn't work, send us an email at info(at)internationalpeaceandconflict.org with the following details:

  • Your name, email address and if your account is expired (please do not submit a free renewal request if your account is currently valid)
  • Confirm that you have tried to renew online but the option to choose 0 in the payment system was not available
  • Provide a brief (2-3) sentences explanation for the request.

Dear Colleagues

Greetings. PCDN members who do not have a current account will be required to go to the Login Page and choose a membership option.  On this page all members will have the option to choose a Free Account, but we strongly encourage you to choose a payment option from $1 and up (we also encourage organizations to consider making a higher level of payment, see below for more details).

As the largest network focused on peace and development in the world, we rely on support from you to cover our many operating costs including hosting, site development, staff, outreach, new initiatives including expanding interviews, new resource guides, outreach, increasing membership, exploring online webinars and much more.

Although we have reached over 25,200 over the past five years (and are rapidly growing), to date only 570 members have provided financial support which is less then 2.2.% (thank you to all who have supported us to date).

Considering the very positive feedback we receive from site members around the world we hope that everyone will consider providing financial support to help PCDN grow (for many we know this is invaluable to your daily work)

We have implemented this change to:

1) To encourage everyone to consider becoming a paying member of PCDN

2) To increase financial revenue for PCDN activities.

As mentioned earlier, our goal is to keep the site open and free so maximize access to all members. We realize not everyone can afford to pay or may live in a country where online payments are not possible. If you are not able to make a payment, you can choose to enter 0$ in the payment option which will provide free access. But we urge you to only consider this if you are not able to make a payment.

Please see the Questions and Answers Below:

1) How can I tell when my membership expires? Click My Settings on the Right Hand Side  the Page (after you have logged in, see sample below).

Then click on profile and go to the bottom of the page. Go to the bottom of the page. There you can see PCDN membership and the expiration date. There is also a space to click renew and follow the steps (see sample below).

2) How do I make a payment? You can make a payment through the renew option at the bottom of the profile page by following the steps outlined above. You will be brought to the membership page and you can choose the payment option you prefer (or free account) as can be seen below.

Payments can also be made via the donate link on the Support Page

3) How much should I pay? We leave this decision up to each person/organization, but urge you to consider the impact of PCDN in your work/life. Particularly if you represent an organization using PCDN to promote your work, learn about opportunities and disseminate information widely, we encourage you to consider making a higher payment.

4) What happens if I cannot make a payment?
Our goal is to keep PCDN accessible to all, but we do urge you to consider making a payment. If this is not possible please follow the steps below:

a) Please wait until your account has expired (do not attempt to renew/request free request prior to this)

b) Sign out of PCDN and then sign back in (this step is important)

c) Once you log back in, the Payment Page should show up (again only if your account has already expired).

d) Follow the steps and choose 0 for payment

e) If this doesn't work, send us an email at info(at)internationalpeaceandconflict.org with the following details:

  • Your name, email address and if your account is expired (please do not submit a free renewal request if your account is currently valid)
  • Confirm that you have tried to renew online but the option to choose 0 in the payment system was not available
  • Provide a brief (2-3) sentences explanation for the request.

5) How long is membership? Membership in PCDN is for 12 months. After that time you will be required to repeat the procedure.

6) I have already made a payment, but my membership hasn't been extended? We have tried to ensure all accounts are up to date, but if you run into problems please contact us at info(at)internationalpeaceandconflict.org

Questions and Answers Related to PCDN Membership/Payments:

Is my Payment Secure? Yes, we are using Paypal one of the leading online payment systems in the world. Payments are processed on their network. Of course as with any online financial transaction, users should ensure they have adequate security on their computer (such as a firewall).

What does it mean to become a member? This means that you have made a payment to help support and grow the PCDN network. Your membership is critical to expanding our work.

Is my Payment Tax-Deductible? PCDN is setup as a Limited Liability Company and is not a nonprofit organization, thus your payment is not tax-deductible.

What will my funds be used for? Your funds will be used to support the costs of hosting, maintaining, outreach, product development and initiatives. This also includes staff time, as the PCDN network now requires the equivalent of three full-time staff to keep the site going and the time involved continues to grow.

Will the site ever require payments? Our goal is keep this site open to all and only request voluntary membership.

Why should I make a payment? As indicated above, the PCDN network is providing a crucial service to thousands around the world. We intend to continue to grow and provide new features. This requires greater investments. In addition, if members are willing to provide financial support this shows their commitment to the PCDN network's growth. To learn more about the concrete impact of PCDN see comments directly from members in the feedback section.

Can you invoice me or my organization: Yes if you or your organization requires an invoice please contact us at info (at) internationalpeaceandconflict.org

How do I make a payment? Click on the donate button that links to the paypal page and follow the steps or you can send us a check.

I live outside the US can I make a payment? Yes PayPal accepts credit card and bank payments from most countries in the world.

Do I need a Paypal account to make a payment? No, once you click on the link you will be brought to the PayPal page. If you have a PayPal account you can login, if you do not, you can click on the bottom left side of the page and indicate you don't have a PayPal account and follow the steps to pay via credit card or bank

Who should I contact for more information? If you have questions feel free to send an email to info (at) internationalpeaceandconflict.org

nothing about membership options on the bottom of my page! will it be active tomorrow 29/05/12?

Your membership has expired as of the 28th, but you can renew following the steps outlined above (free membership option is available)

I went on the membership options section on my page and I see no FREE option. The only low cost option that is available right now is the $1.00 for 12 months option. When will the free option be available so that I can select that since I do not have a job right now and cannot afford to pay anything at this time?

There should be the option to select 0 ( Just checked and it works fine). Please try the steps again above

Thanks. I did just check and did find out you're correct. We are checking with our IT people to see if this can be corrected (the 0 option for free account is available for when people first register but for some reason not showing up in the renew option). For now if anyone wants to renew and cannot pay and needs a free account, send us a brief email with an explanation to info(at)internationalpeaceandconflict.org and we will process the requests manually (it may take a day or two). Hopefully we can get this automated.

So sad that we ( me included), the members do not have enough money to help the network grow...

Thanks. We realize that not everyone can afford to make a payment and/or may live in a country where online payments are not currently possible. That is why we are leaving the option for a free membership as we want to ensure everyone has access to PCDN around the world.

Indeed this is sad and I will also contribute something once I am working, currently a full time student. Many thanks for starting and maintaining this site.

Thanks. We certainly understand and that is why we will maintain the free option for those who cannot pay.

There is no FREE membership or 00 option!!! Some of us cannot afford to pay at present. Do you want to lose these people?!

OF course not we want to keep the site open to all. See the top and the rest of the discussion about the process (there is a glitch in the system but we have a work around process)

Craig, a thought I had about this was to set up a forum for members with more means to sponsor one or another who would like to be a contributing member but don't have the means. Just a thought. I'd be willing to support the membership of a 'friend' on the network. Anyone else? Not sure how this would work, IT wise. :-)
