Peace and Collaborative Development Network

Building Bridges, Networks and Expertise Across Sectors

I'm involved in the development of a format for the television program HOUSE OF PEACE on behalf of the Talpa Holding. The goal is to develop a (not-for-profit) centred around conflict and peoples abilities to deal with them. The starting point is a reality show where young people from different conflict areas will live together in one house for one month. They will work together to implement various tasks such as writing a peace manifesto. The big challenge is whether they are able to reach out to each other and to readjust their long held beliefs about ‘the other’.

Since the greatest care must be exercised, I would greatly appreciate if you would help me by sharing your thoughts about the concept. In order to make things easier, we started the website www.houseofpeace.nl. There you can ask questions, read through the responses of others and join the discussions.

Thanks for joining us!

Best regards,
Marenne Mei

Hi Marenne,
This idea sounds interesting; however it is not practical to be implemented in some countries like Iraq where the level of violence is high. From one side and perhaps culturally it is not acceptable to bring two strange people together, and from the other side, how come these two people trust each others? In a country like Iraq, since the cuolture of non-acceptance, extremism and racism have been practiced and fed for many years this is really very difficult!
But thank you for sharing this with us!

Ayoub

Hi Ayoub,

thank you for your thoughts, and sharing your concerns. Are you from Iraq yourself? I'd be very interested to know if you can give any suggestions on what kind of program will be culturally less 'shocking/weird/offensive/unpractical'.
Currently I am working together with a dialogue organization who is very experienced in media&dialogue programs between university students in 'the west' and 'the arab world'. However to translate their experience into a mass-media formula is an extremely difficult challenge, though we have not given up yet..
I'd like to read more of your ideas,

thank you,
best regards,
Marenne

This sounds very interesting and exciting! What in particular are you looking for when you mention sharing "thoughts about the concept"?

I have some experience with American Friends Service Committee and spending a week with youth and adults in an Institute called "Help Increase The Peace".

Please keep us informed on the progress.

I look forward to exploring the website...
