The Coalition for Work with Psychotrauma and Peace (CWWPP) is a Dutch-registered non-governmental organization that has been working in Vukovar, Croatia since 1995.
Vukovar was an important city for Jews from the early 1800s until the Second World War. In its later history, it was the Upper Rabbinate for an area encompassing a radius of about 150 km. All Jews in the city were deported to Auschwitz in 1941. As in many similar places in Eastern Europe, only a few came back. Although there are still a few people with a Jewish background in the area, there is only one official Jew living there, and he is a foreigner.
Since 2005, the CWWPP, in association with the Jewish Community of Osijek, has been carrying out a project on the history and culture of the Jews of Vukovar and the surrounding area. At first, this work was supported by the Rothschild Foundation of London. After those funds had been used, the CWWPP supported the project with its own funds. Because of a change in priorities, those funds are no longer available. Until now, documents and photographs have been collected and scanned from the museums and governmental offices in the region.
