FURTHER PARTICULARS FOR APPLICANTS

1.    THE POSTS

Three posts are available in the School of Social Science at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader level in the area of ‘Peace and Reconciliation’ (level of appointment will be made on the basis of qualifications and experience). We welcome applications from high quality candidates from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds both within and beyond social science. Whilst inter-disciplinarity is key, one of the posts will be based in Sociology and the successful candidate must be able to contribute to general sociology teaching as well as pursue teaching and research interests in ‘Peace and Reconciliation’. For the other two posts, we invite applications from candidates from any disciplinary background with research and teaching interests in ‘Peace and Reconciliation’, though we are particularly interested in the area of ‘Transitional Justice’.  This field is broadly conceived and is open to candidates who work on a range of topics including (but not restricted to): peace studies, peace education, restorative justice, human rights, gender and peace building (broadly conceived), peace and state building, peace and security, memory studies, victim studies, truth recovery, religion and peace building, theologies of peace, sport and peace studies and other related fields.

Regardless of background and interest, the successful candidates will be located in the School of Social Science although there are opportunities for fruitful collaborations throughout the College of Arts and Social Sciences where other units work on peace and reconciliation, transitional justice and related areas. The School is comprised of Anthropology, Politics & International Relations, and Sociology. Peace and Reconciliation Studies in the School is one of the international research strengths of Sociology and is a growing field in Politics & International Relations.

One of the posts is designed for a quantitative specialist with experience of analyzing large data sets in this field. For all posts candidates whose research has a strong empirical focus are welcome (an empirical focus is required for research on peace and security). Candidates with research expertise in specific geographical areas of study are also welcome; current areas of expertise amongst existing staff focuses on Northern Ireland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Latin America, Sierra Leone and modern Spain. We encourage applications in these areas and beyond.
