Peace and Collaborative Development Network

Building Bridges, Networks and Expertise Across Sectors

Dear colleagues:

I am currently researching indigenous peace building in Iraq, programs, development projects or processes initiated by Iraqis. If you are involved in such a program, I would welcome hearing from you about your work! My thinking is that not enough space (socially, financially, physically) has been given to indigenous Iraqi peacebuilding and that this (as Lederach might suggest) is what is most likely to transform this conflict.

Any thoughts or ideas? Again, I welcome any input.

Sincerely,
Cheryl

Dear Cheryl
I am Iraqi civic activist...and I would like to participate in this discussion
do you like to focus only on indigenous or as general topic based on peace building?

Dear Kevin,
I have seen that you are planning to expand your work into other countries...so I would like to cooperate with you on this purpose.
I am running a civil society organization in Iraq called Development Without Borders Institution DWBI. WE work on different issues including peace building, recently DWBI got a fund from UNOPS & Germany Government to launch a project for 5 months called "Peace Building & Reconciliation Initiative in Kirkuk" and before some months ago we implemented a project on peace building from Relief International RI called "Community Mobilization towards Peace Building in Kirkuk"
We hope to work together on peace building...we know some sources that might support such partnership in peace building and conflict resolution in Iraq.
Best

Dear Cheryl,

If you are still researching this question, I recently returned from Iraq, doing peace work for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) from 2007-2009, where MCC partners with many local Iraqi groups working in peacebuilding. I don't know if I know of any info you don't already have.

I'd have a question for you too, about what you've found so far. I'm trying to locate good written resources on traditional ways ordinary Iraqis address every-day conflicts in their communities. I haven't found much (in English, unfortunately) that can illustrate that picture for outsiders like me. Do you know of any?

Thanks!

Hi John! I am still researching, and have not unfortunately seen that much. (My beginner's Arabic may limit me.) Perhaps reach out to Mohamed Ali Baba (he posted on this thread just above). He runs a program for youth in Iraq. I'm sure he'd be happy to share his own work.

If you'd like to share, I'd love to hear more about your work in Iraq.

Warm regards,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl:

I'm glad to see that you're focusing attention in this area. I think you're exactly right about too little attention and, in particular, too few resources, being focused on supporting truly indigenous peacebuilding efforts in Iraq. I've been working on similar questions in Iraq for about nine years, and work regularly with a loose network of excellent Iraqi partners on projects supporting indigenous peacebuilding efforts. I'd be happy to discuss this in more detail with you, by email or Skype.

I'm also pleased to learn about Mohamed's efforts in Kirkuk, where I have worked a bit also.

Best wishes,

Hi Vishwanath,

If you can be more specific, I can perhaps provide more details. My apologies--I'm not sure what exactly you're asking.

Best regards,
Cheryl
