Africa Peace and Conflict Network Editorial Board openings + call for papers & multimedia submissions

I. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Africa Peace and Conflict Network (APCN) invites submissions for its Occasional Paper Series (OPS) and other publication projects. The OPS is part of APCN's work in knowledge dissemination, and African conflict resolution capacity building.

Papers and multimedia presentations are published on the APCN website. Contributions on a range of salient themes, authored by adiverse body of contributors (including scholars, researchers, and practitioners at various points in their careers).

The Series is a collection of research findings, policy analysis, and practitioner reflections, submitted by a diverse array of authors with a broad range of specializations and expertise in African conflicts and their resolution.

APCN publications are available to the public through the APCN website (www.africaworkinggroup.org). We publish papers on a range of salient themes, authored by a diverse body of contributors, including scholars, researchers, and practitioners.

The following types of submissions are accepted for publication review:

1. Research Papers:
Scholarly research papers like those published in refereed journals such as African Studies Review, African Affairs, and other scholarly journals.

2. Briefings:
APCN’s Briefings provide a forum for innovative discussions not found in most scholarly journals. Briefings are one to twelve pages in length, and they may contain reports from practitioners, topical overviews, and other more open-ended discussions than is typical for research articles. Briefings may or may not contain citations and references. The key criteria are an accessible writing style and topical relevance. Submissions should provide valuable or thought-provoking information for persons interested or involved in peace and conflict in Africa. Practitioners or others lacking experience with academic publishing are especially encouraged to utilize this forum. See APCN’s current publications for examples. Instructors may find Briefings particularly useful for courses with less advanced students.

3. Multimedia Presentatiosn:
Video and audio clips, photojournals, powerpoint presentations, and other multimedia pieces on relevant themes are also accepted. The material must have no copyright or other restrictions, unless usage permission is granted. See APCN’s current publication releases for examples.

4. Book reviews:
APCN accepts analytical reviews of books on relevant topics. Reviews may be from one to eight pages in length, and they should follow the APCN style guidelines.

Submissions will be peer-reviewed to ensure quality and suitability, and feedback will be provided. Submission should be formatted according to APCN's guidelines, free of writing errors, have a good conceptual base, and draw on and present useful data. Some innovation in the work is preferred, such as the use of original data or the presentation of a novel analytical perspective.

Selected papers will eventually be published as a special issue of a research journal or as an edited volume. Submissions are welcomed from both APCN members and non-members. For more information, see Guidelines for Authors.

II. GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS (read carefully)

Papers should be well-written, concise, and thematically relevant.

Since they are working papers, it is possible to be more flexible regarding content than the rigid requirements of journal articles. Papers
may therefore be more lengthy than usual, as long as they are not repetitive, and more (relevant) ethnographic material than normal
may be included to elucidate the core themes.

Submissions should be in MS word (.doc) or rich text (.rtf) format with no commenting and editing restrictions. Multimedia presentations
should be in widely used formats such as .ppt and should contain no copyrighted material without the appropriate citations and
obtainment of necessary permissions.

Manuscript submissions must be formatted either according to the Chicago style guidelines or the similar ones of the American

APCN does not provide editing or formatting assistance, so submissions that do not meet its requirements will not be published. Do
not submit papers that do not conform to the requirements or have not been carefully edited and checked for errors.

It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that papers meet the formatting and style requirements and that all usage of others' ideas andmaterials is appropriately referenced.

Submissions must:
-have a title page with the paper title, the author’s names and institutional affiliation (if any), and a 150 words or less biographical
statement on each author

-be formatted according to the above guidelines and use 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spacing in the body of the text andsingle-spacing in footnotes and

-be submitted by email, and the message should indicate type of submission as described in the CFP, i.e. Research Paper, Briefing, etc.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND CITATION
Authors are expected to adhere to normal standards for intellectual property rights and plagiarism, and authors assume full
responsibility for the content of their papers. APCN does not assume any responsibility for the content of its publications.

APCN publications are intended for broad consumption by a diverse audience. APCN does not prohibit authors and contributors from
publishing their work elsewhere if they wish. Authors publishing content originally released by APCN are requested to cite the APCN
piece in the new publication and to notify APCN’s administration of the subsequent release.

All use of ideas, data, and other materials from APCN publications must be acknowledged and cited.

The suggested citation format is:
Author name. Year of publication. “Paper title.” Paper (or Briefing) No. X of the Africa Peace and Conflict Network Occasional Paper
Series. Mark Davidheiser (ed.). www.africaworkinggroup.org.

The content of APCN publications may not be sold, but they may be used by educational institutions for instructional purposes. In cases
of educational usage, please send an email message or letter notifying the APCN of how the materials are to be used.

The content of APCN’s publications should not be sold or commercially distributed.


III. INTERNATIONAL EDITORIAL BOARD OPENINGS:
APCN is currently accepting nominations, including self-nominations, for its International Editorial Board. These are leadership
positions; members of the Editorial Board are expected to participate in the development and growth of APCN. The primary work involved consists of peer-reviewing, i.e. examining submissions for publication to ensure they meet APCN’s quality standards and giving suggestions for bringing them up to par if they do not.

In addition, Board members should contribute to the growth and promotion of APCN and its activities and seek and solicit submissions
of manuscripts and multimedia presentations. Whenever possible, Board members should initiate the exploration of institutional
linkages, propose collaborative projects, and suggest potential undertakings. The (unpaid) work for this post can be done online.
