The Position:

In accordance with the University for Peace Charter, the Rector, appointed by the
University’s Council for a five‐year term, shall be the “Chief Academic and Administrative
Officer” of the University. In this capacity he or she shall assume the overall, responsibility
for the organization, direction and administration of the University in accordance with the
general policies formulated by the Council of the University. This implies responsibility for

Keeping the University’s strategy up to date; 

Implementation of the policies established by the Council for all aspects of UPEACE’s programmes and plans;

Preparation of the programme, work plans and annual budget estimates of theUniversity;

The financial management of the University;

The appointment, in accordance with terms and conditions laid down by theCouncil, of all personnel required for the proper functioning of the University

The development of an internal and external communication plan for the University; 

The preparation of Council meetings, including supplying the Council members with appropriate information.

In addition the Rector is expected to:

 Act as the legal representative of the University and to exercise its legal power of

 Represent the University in meetings and other key events by the UPEACE system
and its partners.


 Doctoral degree in a discipline related to the mission of the University;

 Demonstrated management experience at senior level in an academic or other
similar institution with an international scope;

 Fluency in English and Spanish.

Personal requirements:

The Rector shall reside in Costa Rica, where UPEACE’s headquarters is located;

Commitment to the issues of education for peace and to the mission of UPEACE;

Leadership and teambuilding qualities;

Networking skills with demonstrated capability to work in close cooperation with
individuals, academic institutions, governments, intergovernmental and nongovernmental

 Experience of working in multi‐cultural environments in a transparent manner with
the highest standards of competence, integrity and efficiency.

 Entrepreneurial attitude including fundraising skills.

application period, the Nominating Committee will review all applications and contact only those
shortlisted candidates that will continue to the next phase of the selection process. These short

ready to take office by mid‐August 2013.
