Event Description

Overview
This is a full-scale simulation course for individuals who feel they are ready for assessment, and do not need level 2 training. Put into teams and sent straight into the simulation ‘field’ as the ‘EU team’ you will experience what this sort of work entails. Teams are set objectives for the weekend and will meet with civil society representatives and local and international actors in order to achieve these objectives. You will be assigned an ‘observer’ for the weekend who will give you personal feedback and advice on further training needs and opportunities for professional development.

Who is it for?

This simulation weekend is a ‘taster’ for those interested in working for an NGO or official mission in a conflict zone. It is open to anyone with a serious interest in finding out what this kind of work involves. No prior field experience is required. A relevant academic or professional background is helpful but not essential. There will be no undue hardship or stress involved in the exercise.

Course outline

“Quasiland has been at war for nearly two decades. A peace agreement was reached a few weeks ago. Under the terms of the signed settlement, a small European Union mission is to move in to oversee the transition to peace and democracy. You are part of this mission...” You will be…
Monitoring a cease-fire agreement
Investigating the security situation
Dealing with Internally Displaced People trying to return home
This is a simulation course. You will be placed in 'EU fact finding mission teams' and deployed to a fictional country. Teams are set objectives for the weekend and will meet with civil society representatives and local and international actors in order to achieve these objectives. Each team will be shadowed by an experienced observer who will assess individuals in the core skills essential to working in conflict, and provide in-depth team and one-to-one feedback.

This is progressive and timely in my country where almost in a row we see TV scenes of women murdered in cold blood by their 'husbands'. In some cases children witness and begin to take it as normal occurances. We need to break the cycle and create/…
