The UNITAR New York Office in cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime will be holding a workshop which will be Analysis of the Outcome of the 57th Session of the CSW:  Violence Against Women and Girls on April 18-19, 2013 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Background

Women and girls are uniquely and disproportionately affected by armed conflict, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS and problems related to reproductive rights and access to health services. Two thirds of human trafficking victims worldwide are female. Women constitute at least 50% of HIV/AIDS victims worldwide—and according to the World Health Organization; they account for 60% of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. In accordance with its multi-year program of work, The Commission on the Status of Women is tackling these and other critical issues at the 57^th session, which will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York from the 4-15 of March, 2013.

This workshop seeks to analyze the critical issues related to the 57^th Commission’s work after the Commission is complete, on their priority theme: “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls”. To this end, the workshop will feature expert presentations on key topics related to women’s rights and gender based violence, such as women and HIV/AIDS, violence against women in conflict and post-conflict zones, reproductive rights, and human trafficking.

Event Objectives

This workshop intends to provide delegates, academics, government representatives and NGO members engaged in the CSW process with a forum for discussion on the outcome of the 57th Commission on the Status of Women as well as to critically examine and discuss different strategies for the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls, including measures currently undertaken by the United Nations.

Methodology

The program will be based on a participatory approach and include expert presentations and seminar style discussions. Participants will receive a comprehensive set of reference and background material, including selected articles and other reference documents, copies of PowerPoint presentations, and other relevant materials. Resource persons will comprise senior UN officials as well as experienced practitioners from the NGO sector and academics from leading research institutions in the field of violence against women. Participants who successfully complete the orientation program by attending all sessions will receive a Certificate of Participation.
