Location: Washington, DC

Event Type: symposium
Organized By: Thea Harvey
Latest Activity: Oct. 28, 2009
The conference will analyze and offer actionable recommendations for the ongoing economic crisis and reform proposals, including the new initiatives of the G-20 and the Obama administration. Issues will range from banks and regulation reform to international banking and finance including the international monetary system. Discussion will also cover unemployment and the mortgage crisis. Featured international experts include: Damon Silvers, James K. Galbraith, Stephany Griffith-Jones, Michael Lind, Jan Kregel, Robert Johnson and many others.
The current state of the “shadow banking system,” rising unemployment rates, the sinking value of the dollar, and the lasting mortgage crisis have made clear to the international community the need for long-view reform. Minor short-term remedies such as stimulus plans have been introduced, but they are plainly insufficient. This conference will consider the larger implications of the new administration’s economic policy on the international financial and monetary system (IFMS). Experts will take explicit account of the deep political nature of the current climate in the economic crisis, the international monetary system and their effect on international security relations and peace in the world. The Next Stage forum is hosted by Economists for Peace and Security; Foundation for Human Progress’ Initiative for Rethinking the Economy; the New America Foundation; and the World Trade Center Washington DC.
Although there is no cost for the conference, pre-registration is requested to facilitate refreshments and seating. Please email Thea Harvey (theaharvey@epsusa.org) to register.
