Event Description

Background

The unique working environment of tense conflict and post-conflict zones requires a distinct set of skills and knowledge for successful team management. The structure of peace operations often involves the cooperation of many individuals working towards a common mission mandate where the importance of teamwork and healthy group dynamics are essential for achieving an efficient and productive, collaborative effort. The need for leadership, team ethics, and team management are essential components of successful peace operations.

Event Objectives

The course aims to equip those involved in supervision, team work and management with the skills to perform these tasks effectively in peace operations.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

Summarize the features of effective leadership;
Recognize and employ the principles for effective team management;
Identify team dynamics and processes;
Practice the traits of good team work;
Apply problem diagnosing and problem solving skills;
Apply the principles of team motivation, team development and team organization.

Methodology

The course is delivered on-line, in asynchronous mode, and is moderated by international experts. The course places particular emphasis on self-paced learning, with participants being primarily responsible for their own learning throughout the duration of the course.

Targeted Audience

The course is designed for civilians, military and police personnel eager to serve in peace operations. Participants are expected to have no prior, or limited, experience in peace operations and to come from a vast and diverse demographic and professional range. At this stage, the course is neither specialized for a particular gender or age group, nor to specific background experience and education. Nevertheless, it is highly advisable that participants have an overall understanding of the structure, components and functioning of a peace operation.

Additional Information

Participants with a passing grade of 80% on the assessment activities included throughout the course will be eligible for the certificate of completion.

Deadline for application is: 5th of April 2011.

Fee: USD 500, A limited number of fellowships are available to candidates from Least Developed Countries (as per UN-OHRLLS list).
